We are not even there there yet. But I was just wondering, what can you do so that your time is not wasted while awaiting your EAD and Advanced Parole? Dear Fiance (DF) and I got in a little tiff over this because we are both stressed out (me from job, and him from "having" to move to Murica). Appreciate your inputs.

He can’t work in any capacity where you would usually expect up be paid (even payment in kind is forbidden). So he can’t “help out” at your work place, mow the neighbor’s lawn, etc but could volunteer at a soup kitchen, animal shelter, etc in the kind of role that people do for the cause and not with the expectation of being paid.

Most use the time to familiarize themselves with the area, make friends, look around for job opportunities. He can attend job fairs, etc but cannot be employed until he has an EAD

Timeline in brief:

I-130 filed: February 5, 2016

NOA1: February 8, 2016 Nebraska

POE: December 19, 2016 Las Vegas

N-400 filed: September 30, 2019

Thank you. I advised him such. Even for an USC, the interview process itself takes 3-4 months. I told him he could shop for jobs and interview. I am really not concerned as we have the means (been saving for this moment) to go on one income. Coming from a metropolitan setting, the idea of being out of work for 4 months kills him. I already have a plan in place to keep him mad busy, but he wants out of the house type of busy. Causes me stress already.

I had to spend 5 months puttering around. I looked into college, applied for employment and explained to employers that i was waiting on my EAD. I also did puzzles but he may be different. Aside from familiarizing himself with his new community maybe he could see if there are some VJ members that live around him that could hang out with him. I wish I would have done this during my wait. You both already know the stress of an immigration process but I would encourage you both to take self care time to recharge.

There's ways to make the period less awful, but that's the best to hope for. As noted, certain types of volunteer services are good. Taking classes (degree or certificate or just to learn a skill/hobby) is fine as well.

Don’t expect the wait to be short either, when I sent in my AOS/EAP/AP packet in January this year the expected wait time was 4 to 5 months, that’s now blown out to 6 to 8 months.

I’ve already secured a job offer and luckily my prospective employer is happy to wait, but the process is frustrating and you do feel like your life is on hold.

As a lot of people have said on this topic in plenty of posts on the “waiting” just take the time to enjoy each other’s company, do some domestic travel if you can, volunteer, exercise and so on, there’s nothing else to do but be patient and accept that this is all part of the process.

My husband got a bit bored and stir-crazy whilst waiting (it was also Fall and Winter here).  We were extremely lucky that his EAD/AP card only took 3.5 months after the biometrics.

He fixed a bunch of stuff around the house, got into the neighborhood buy nothing group on FB, got set up with new doctors, and we also brought his oldest daughter over to visit from NZ.  Now he’s working so much, I think he kinda misses those days, lol.

My dogs LOVED having someone home all the time.   They’re pissed now.
