The petitioner doesn't need to be the sponsor. We can qualify through our assets OR failing that (though we pass the test comfortably) there is an option of a joint sponsor.

Right, so the joint sponsor is actually going to take care of the every day needs of the immigrant?  My point was that if the primary sponsor (the petitioner) is poor enough to qualify for medicaid, chances are he or she cannot afford to bring over an immigrant.

Could the Joint Sponsor help get Insurance?

We likely won't need a joint sponsor but I'm not really sure how they would help in this case. We wouldn't be able to join anyone else's health insurance so beyond helping us look for private insurance plans there's not much we can do.

We can look into and get quotes from many different companies for private insurance, I was just curious if anyone took the temporary medicaid route to help keep costs down in the beginning.

No, we very likely will not need a joint sponsor. On the very off chance that we do need a joint sponsor then I suppose, on paper, they would be liable to take care of the every day needs of the immigrant. In reality, we have plenty of savings and will both be able to find jobs shortly after arriving. They may not be the most ideal at first, but we're both working professionals here so I don't see a huge issue on that front.

I totally understand what you're saying though. I appreciate people trying to point out that we may have sponsorship issues, but we've studied that thoroughly. I lurk the forum quite often and I get that people post these topics without understanding the process (or taking the time to), but we've done our homework in that regard.

I was just interested in seeing what people have done when they first arrived back in the US after living abroad.

I am in similar situation with canadavisa22.

I came to America in May with K-1 visa and my fiance ( at the time ) had no income since she just finished school. We used her brother who was a joint sponsor. My wife had medicaid and it didn't cause any problem. Now I just applied to adjust status with 1) assets having over $500k USD ( IN THE FOREIGNERS BANK ACCOUNT ), 90K USD in the joint account we opened since I came to the US which I attached a bank statement and also had her brother do a joint sponsor form to be sure we have no issues with W-2's, Tax Transcripts, and pay stubs etc...

As of right now I(beneficiary) do not have any health insurance but need to get something, problem is my tax situation in Canada makes things complicated. I am not allowed to work on the K-1 but I still earn "income" from my Canadian corporation. Just confusing because not sure how to "earn" income in Canada but pay taxes to the US and get ACA... xD

It sounds like you're in a pretty comfortable situation financially at the moment. Why not bite the bullet and just purchase private insurance for now?

Also, it sounds like you should talk to your accountant right away!

Yeah finding a decent accountant that doesn't charge 300-500$/hr is the problem for my situation >:)

For private insurance you need to answer questions based on income which right now is very hard to answer because I don't have any US tax papers. My wife never filed tax herself since she never had a job yet.

You can buy Insurance with 0 income.

Slightly off topic, but do you pay anything out of pocket monthly for your insurance? One of things I'm trying to understand is how much Americans pay out of pocket for their health insurance.

I understand that every employer plan will vary based on the job, but generally speaking, do most professional jobs come with a standard benefits package where you might have some co-pays and that's it? Or is paying some kind of monthly premium part of it?

i wish we had universal healthcare where i didnt have to pay anything out of pocket LMAO

for myself, husband and my kid, its around $700 a month i think from my paycheck. co pays and deductibles vary - my average co pay is 25 i think and i dont remember what deductibles i have. i know i dont have any for routine doctor visits, just the copay.

i 485, 130, EAD and AP

04/09/2019    NOA1 received/check cashed i 485 and 130 (direct adjustment)

11/7/2019      Interview- Norfolk

11/10/2019    APPROVED (notification rec'd 11/10, approval dated 11/8)

DONE FOR TWO YEARS!!! ;)

Filed everything ourselves with no RFE's or delays.

CR1 for Child under 21 (20 at time of filing)- Filed by LPR Spouse for his son

4/4/20     Mailed packet

4/12/20   NOA1 rec'd

10/14/21 (havent heard anything... when do i start to get worried?)

9/15/22 APPROVED! Now to wait for NVC and interview....

ROC

10/14/21 Mailed to AZ PO Box. Let the waiting begin. Again.

10/16/21 Received at PO Box

10/19/21 Received Text NOA1

10/23/21 Received Mailed NOA1

Damn...$700/mth is steep! That's $10K a year in health insurance. And that's WITH a benefits plan???

I have to move to a state with much lower taxes than Ontario to make up for that lol.

Then there are usually yearly deductibles which must be paid before plans even pay a penny.......sometimes several thousand dollars.

The problem with your situation is that that nice nest-egg could be wiped out entirely with a car accident, emergency surgery, cancer diagnosis etc.  in the long run, it is so much cheaper to purchase insurance, even if the premiums seem steep vs what you’re used to.

Cheaper than not having insurance if you accrue huge medical bills.  Some of the cancer drugs I administer to patients are $30k per infusion!

The best thing is to incorporate insurance as a consideration into your overall compensation when job-searching - as a concept.  A high premium and high annual deductible may be worth it for the right salary, but all things being equal, it could wind up eating more of your net earnings.

I am not sure about other types of employers, but hospitals tend to have excellent coverage for their employers.  The others would be big companies:  Boeing, Microsoft etc.

that is quite a scary thought, would short term health insurance be optimal in my situation? because in 6 months when I get my EAD I was going to open a business and get health care through my business (?)
