This my first Independence Day in the US and the first one we are celebrating together as a family. It feels a wee bit strange to be celebrating this country's independence from my country but I'm just going with the flow.

I'm going to make baked beans from scratch (Dr BBQ's recipe), hotdogs, hamburgers, potato salad, corn on the cob, strawberry shortcake and we are having fireworks later. My husband wanted to get English beer to even things up a little bit, but I couldn't find any in the stores here.

What are you guys doing to celebrate today? Do any of you have "interesting" traditions that you observe today? (Keep it clean, please).

Happy 4th July 🎉🎇🎆 enjoy it!!! I was in America last year with my husband and we watched the fireworks and celebrated with a few drinks. Unfortunately we're apart for this one BUT it's the last holiday we have to spend apart. I'll be with him for this  Halloween, thanksgiving & Christmas. So I'm so excited for those. Just need to get my visa appointment out the way on the 12th July and hopefully not to much longer after that I'll be reunited 😊

Adil is working

but we live in the South and all we have to do is open the curtains tonight as red necks will be setting off fireworks all around us for the next 3 nights

we may go out for a while into the road and help our closest neighbor set them off

It's not just redness that do it though. Hispanics are pretty bad about doing that as well. Not to mention they love to fire off fireworks off during new years as well. We had this happen a lot when we lived in Low Angeles.

But all that is easy to deal with compared to getting a bullet in the top of my Tahoe due to celebratory gun fire on New Years. It didn't go all the way through so I didn't notice it until water started coming inside my SUV after it rained. So I had to patch it up before it could ruin my interior.

This 4th of July I took the kids swimming, then came back to the house to change and recharge before going on base for fireworks. But it is now thunderstorming so we don't know if it will be called off tonight.

Last year on my first 4th July in US my fiance went down on one knee and asked me to marry him just before the fireworks on the stadium went off ... later he went on about how he should have waited a couple of days for my birthday instead. This year I'm in bed since it's past 10 pm here and I get up early tomorrow and my fiance is hopefully going to some neighbours house but more likely he'll be painting the livingroom walls

We're the same. No extended family, too hot here, but I'm just thankful to be together & remind myself why we did this. Hope you've had an ok day. Holidays can be lonely too.

Right. Aren't fireworks bloody annoying when you're not in the mood? Hope you get some quality time together soon.

Dr BBQs baked beans were pukka. Next time I'll make them with baked sweet potato, a dollop of yogurt & cheesy croutons, just like he suggested.

Mowed the lawn, trimmed the flowers, ate and took a nap. Then grilled steak for the family, then got refreshed for fireworks with FIL and wife. MIL and FIL said this is the best holiday they have had in a long while. Tomorrow is another day. Happy 4th of July everyone.
