The diseased lungs are even worse in real life. I've seen many a lung laid out on a pathologist's table, being dissected after the "previous owner" had died of lung cancer.

Were you a mortician or something?

Cytogenetic technologist; worked right next door to the pathology lab where we collected our tumour samples from. It was in that lab they they prepared organs for testing and biopsy. Saw just about every organ of the human body, sliced and diced.

Were they smelly? I've seen plenty of organs, but only in jars of formaldehyde. My first job right out of uni was at a medical school.

Well, the fresh ones weren't, mainly because they hadn't had a chance to decompose. To be honest, the formaldehyde smelt far worse. 3:1 methanol/acetic acid was awful smelling too.

What would happen is that the pathologist would remove the organs during the postmortem, the organs would then be sent to the path lab for dissecting and biopsy and then they would be fixed with formaldehyde or put into a tissue transport medium (if the tests required "live" cells; which our genetic lab did).

I'd see the organs at all stages of this process. My lab would actually get in whole foetuses (around 14-18 weeks gestation) lots of times as we did the diagnosis on many miscarriages or terminations for abnormalities. Sounds awful but you really do get used to it and hardly batted an eyelid at human "bits". Some of those were a couple of weeks old sometimes and they ponged to high heaven, but we had safety hoods that extracted some of the odour.

I'm not a smoker, but these anti tobacco ads are pretty irritating to me. This latest one is the lamest.

"Truth" Ad

"As long ago as 1969, a tobacco company executive agreed to avoid direct advertising to young people, yet 10 years later (1979) they supplied their products to be featured in the muppet movie...

Okay, first- are we bashing the tobacco companies for something they did nearly 30 years ago? Second of all, they said "direct advertising" and supplying products in a movie is not the same as "direct adversting". The muppet show was long known to be a show that was full of double entendres appealing to both adults and children, and surely we all know by now that by now people smoked in movies made in the 70s.

Just my opinion.

you are correct sir.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

I Think Smokers have the right to chose whether or not they want to light up and compromise their health,So long as they do it in a way that no one else around them has to smell or be exposed to their habit. I am not a smoker, I can't stand the smell of smoke and agree with Smoking bans at indoor public places such as resturaunts and Airports. I do not thuink that it is fair to tax smokers unfairly.

However these Truth ads are bogus. Also the ads by Phillip Morris about resources on how to quit smoking.

####### they sell cigarettes and then turn around and run campaign on how to quit. Not impressed!

Just as much as you all believe that people should be able to choose to smoke, I believe that people like the turth campaign have a right to put their message out there. This is the USA correct?

I don't think anyone was ever advocating they be prohibited from airing their PSAs. This is the USA, and you have freedom of speech, but when you exercise your freedom of speech, you are not protected from criticism of it when you say something lame.
