I remember far back when they had commercials on TV for cigarettes. I can still remember some of those jingles.

I liked the Benson and Hedges commercials. The ones where they always got the cigarettes caught in things because they are longer. The "I would rather fight than switch" commercials were cool also. Yes, I am old!!

I think that ANY ad that is going to make a kid (or anyone, for that matter) stop and think about (not) smoking is a good one.

I just quit a year ago after a 25 year, pack a day habit. And I'll tell you now, that I wish to hell I had never lit up that very first one those many years ago.

I am a smoker. I agree that it's obviously bad for you. But, why don't they make the same ads about consuming alcohol? Isn't one just as bad as the other? In fact, I would say alcohol is worse as ordinary cigarettes don't make you drunk when you have too much. Seriously, why don't they do ads about stopping drinking alcohol, and why is it continually advertised as a good thing to do. Haven't they heard of liver disease? Just my opinion.

While I understand your point, there's also the fact that if you smoke around other people, you can adversely affect their health too with second hand smoke.

If you drink alcohol around others, it doesn't do anything to them, know what I mean?

The diseased lungs are even worse in real life. I've seen many a lung laid out on a pathologist's table, being dissected after the "previous owner" had died of lung cancer.

Cytogenetic technologist; worked right next door to the pathology lab where we collected our tumour samples from. It was in that lab they they prepared organs for testing and biopsy. Saw just about every organ of the human body, sliced and diced.

Were they smelly? I've seen plenty of organs, but only in jars of formaldehyde. My first job right out of uni was at a medical school.

Those ads suck!

How can we be a democratic society and allow one thing to be promoted, but not the "flip side" of the same issue, then let people make their own choice?

Anyway, it doesn't really matter much. Smoking isn't going to kill the next generation of Americans. They're too fat to breathe! Smoking, second-hand smoke... doesn't matter when you're a 35-year-old diabetic that weighs 250 pounds.

I guess it would help to not smoke, but why are the adds for "truth" being told in a way that's not-so-truthful?

Canadian cigarettes all have warning and pictures on every pack. Cigarettes are also 10 dollars a pack here (25 Cigs per pack)

To me cigarettes are cheap in the US.
