I ride Jeepneys and trikes often. Never comfortable. I prefer a taxi but sometimes it is not an option. In Dipolog there are no Jeepneys or taxis so you  are stuck with trikes or hubble hubbles.  Same in the province where she lives.  I live in an inner belt suburb of St. Louis and people are getting wacked left and right here. You just have to know where to go and when. Just like the Philippines. I can't imagine living with that much fear and apprehension...But like a previous poster said....To each their own.....

I think Manila is safer .

There are a fair number of U.S. cities I try to avoid .. and yup Chicago is one of them.

I've motorcycled all over this country, border to border, coast to coast, packin'heat and avoiding areas that restrict that whenever possible.

I don't mind the tricycles!  I will never set foot on a Jeepney.  I guess we are lucky where she lives as there are lots of tricycles for short trips and plenty of taxis and grabs available.

Both are kind of fun in limited dosages.  Mandaue <--> Liloan on a Jeepney is ok.

On Bohol the only option the resort offered was a trike from Anda back to Tagbilaran.  I delined, did not wish to spend that much time as low-speed bait for all the cars & trucks on the road.  Relatives managed to find a V-Hire for us.

Meanwhile in today's news there was a another broadcaster rubbed out on Mindanao (not in Davao) and two "successful" riding-in-tandem hits on Cebu (a grandpa was snuffed out in front of his family in Mandaue, and a trisikad driver was removed from the evolutionary tree in Barangay Pilipog, Cordova).  The radio host was the 13th journalist killed since Duterte took office.  I didn't have time to follow the day's events on the other 7000 islands.

Early one morning around 4 am I was catching a trike to go to bus station to catch a plane and we almost got ran over by a semi truck.  Turned out the Trike driver was drunk.

That was many years ago, I learned my lesson and now check their eyes to see if they look drunk when I am getting in a trike.

It seems  lot of this is based on the news sources that you use. I miss the old days of news whe there was no internet and all news was given without commentary, slant, or agenda.

I love the Philippines. I am always cautious as I would be in any foreign country. I have never been afraid and everyone I meet treats me very well. I can't wait to retire there.

The Philippines Kangaroo court system

Just another reason why it will stay a 3rd world country forever

Also why the medical system will always be poor in the Philippines. There seems to be a lot of malpractice there and if you sue the hospital, they will in turn sue you for libel. Which is crazy because the life of a person is vital. I was a victim of malpractice in the Philippines with the death of my wife prematurely. I also have another friend who lost her husband after just two months being married because the doctors decided it was better to send a potential head injury home than to get a ct scan of the brain. Anyway...other than that love the Philippines.

Romans 8:28 - And we know that all things work together for the good of those who love God: those who are called according to His purpose.
Hebrews 11:6 - And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.

I have seen nothing but incompetence and ignorance in the medical profession in the Philippines.

If you really need medical attention you get your butt to the airport and get back home to your home country like USA or UK or Australia, the medical is piss poor in Philippines.

Depends on the hospital.   There are world class hospitals in Manila.  And of course there are some at the other end of the spectrum

I can tell you the ones in Davao City and Cebu are not world class

St. Luke's Global City, St. Luke's Quezon City  and Makati Medical are the top three.

Political opponents and people critical of Duterte have been murdered and intimidated.  I have never heard a single person deny that until you.  It is what it is.  The death squads work for the politicians.  Life is not very valuable there.  During my visits to Davao, I found Manila to be much safer and more comfortable to be in.  I even stayed at the Marco Polo in Davao and there wasn't a single time on the street that I felt completely comfortable.  I know the stats.  Manila has higher crime but Davao has a more street gang feel to me.

My buddies kid got married recently, Duterte showed up to the wedding along with his daughter the mayor of Davao and Bato the senator guy from Santa Cruz and another senator.  It was two PNP getting married.
