Question of the day.

Those of you who already has SSN (even if you came with K1) how long does it take to mail it?

I went back to the SS office this morning because I've got my EAD. (However, I shouldn't go to the office because when I applied to the EAD I marked that area to apply for an SSN as well). So it's been 14 days my EAD got approved and still no sign of SSN. The lady on Friday and this morning also told me that my name is not in the Social Security system. Today she also said I should wait to apply for an SSN another week because "MAYBE" the USCIS didn't let the Social Security know about my SSN (she said it happens lot of times) and if I apply for an SSN now and the USCIS also did (or will do this week) that could mess up my Social Security. The lady said I should've already got my SSN because it's been 14 days but sometimes it takes up to 3 weeks to delivery the SSN card.

So how long did it take to you to receive the SSN card?

Call SSA Headquarters in Maryland.

The SSN you applied for on the I765 will be sent from there, not your local SSA. Likely your local SSA wont have access to the info HO will. Tell them you recently received your EAD.

For those that have had their interview and were approved, how long did it take for you to officially receive the card in the mail? Of course my husband is anxious to travel back home and work but with all of our lovely experiences with Immigration I will not book anything in advance until I have that hard copy in hand!

Interviewed on a Tuesday. App updated to approved Wednesday at 2am. GC received on Saturday.

Question: My husband is doing his residency near Tampa Florida, I am still working in California for another 5 months. We applied in the office in California (I assume Los Angeles since this is the closet office). We bought a house in Tampa and have just been flying back and forth every weekend or every other weekend to spend time together until I move there. Should we change the application office we are applying to Tampa instead of Los Angeles? Would this delay us more or speed us up since I assume LA has one of the worst application timelines? What do you guys think?

For AOS from a K-1, no matter where in the US you live, you apply to the Chicago lockbox. Your application is initially processed at the National Benefits Center in Missouri (again, regardless of where you live).

Your biometrics appointment will be at the application support center that covers your physical address (see https://egov.uscis.gov/office-locator/#/asc , search by your zip code)

Your interview will be at the field office that covers your physical address ( see https://www.uscis.gov/about-us/find-uscis-office/field-offices ) unless it's moved to another nearby office to resolve backlogs

There is no way to change your field office except by changing where you actually live and informing USCIS of this.

Your official residence on file with USCIS has to be where you actually live, which sounds like it's near LA. When you move, you have to report this to USCIS within ten days (and should notify USPS). When you report you change of address, they should change the field office associated with your case to the one that covers your new address. Sometimes USCIS isn't great about handling address changes, but there's not a lot you can do about it except confirming they have your new address on file and with some luck, having someone friendly at your old address who can check for mail incorrectly delivered there (since some USCIS mail is not supposed to be forwarded by USPS).

Also, LA doesn't have great processing times, and Tampa is quite fast, but LA is nowhere near the worst (which appears to be SF now by VJ averages).

Well physical address is complicated. Since mine during the week is in California, his is in Florida and on the weekends, it just depends on who is travelling for that weekend. Eventually both of ours will be in Florida. We applied Nov. 2. We have EAD already ( obviously since he is working as a resident). All the numbers around ours have already been processed for an interview.. I am not sure why ours hasn't. We are at 238 since it stated case is ready to be scheduled for an interview. Our address in California is in Santa Barbara, so I assume that the nearest office is LA and that is where we are waiting for. Not sure if that is Los Angeles or LA County because both are options on the processing times. I really don't have any idea if we should go through the trouble of changing the physical address to Tampa or not or if we are supposed to. Again,  we kind of both have two physical addresses at the moment.

Going by what you've said, it seems pretty clear your physical address is in Santa Barbara, and your husband's is Tampa. Visiting somewhere on alternate weekends, or owning a home elsewhere doesn't change where you actually reside.

Have you input your zipcode here to know what your LFO is?

Thank you for your input but this doesn't actually help me to know which office is the better one to keep our interview at.

No I didn't know how to do that thank you! Apparently in California we would be in San Fernando Valley not LA.. Strange because we are actually closer to LA.

And I keep trying to tell you that you can't choose the office you interview at. That's determined by USCIS.

Your case will be assigned to the field office that covers your physical address (or rarely, another nearby office to deal with backlog).

We finally have our AOS interview at the Nashville F.O. tomorrow morning at 8:15 AM! We didn't get much sleep last night, and I can pretty much bet we won't tonight either (especially having to be there so ridiculously early!), but we're very much looking forward to getting this over with, haha.

Hopefully we won't have any more last minute panic attacks... I'll post a full review once we're done! Stay tuned...

Good luck!!! :) i’m sure you guys will do fine! Let us know how it goes.
