With the cell phones, home phone line for computer, and sporadic calls to Jamaica, our bill is around $200 a month. Way, WAY down from when it used to be before he got approved.

At first it was very high, because he had no land-line or easy access to a computer....so calling his cell phone was the only option. Then, between my cell phone (only used for texting) and phone cards, my phone bills were over $300/month....and he was spending over $100 each month.  Now that he has a PC and Skype our phone bills are 1/4th of that. :)

I've looked into Vonage and Skype, but their rates to Nigeria aren't as cheap as the phone card I have.

I spend between $200-300 per month. Closer to $300 if I have to call his cell phone more than the land line.

We use Google - talk which is like Skype. It's ossum and it's free :)

With calls 7 days a week, with a minimum of 2 hours talk-time per call, I don't even want to think about how high our phone bills would be ...

There's still the texting though ... and my hubby has a provider where he actually has to pay when he gets one of my texts. Is that a US thing? I find it rather odd ...

Before my fiancee was able to get DSL, I had some rather high phone bills. But since then we have just used yahoo voice or the voice feature on google talk. There are some countries where internet service is still pretty poor so computer to computer voip may not really be an option.

For those who want virtual numbers, both skype and lingo offer them, but only for certain countries. It is possible though that another countrys number will be cheaper for your SO to call.

First I used regular phone cards that were about $168/ month plus $20 in text messages. Then I found pingo.com (love that they keep records of phone calls) and my bills skyrocketed to $400/month  because we were still talking for the same amount of time. Then he found out how much I was spending and relegated me to $50/month (which is like 10 minutes a day) :o ...this month it has been like $100.

I wish there was a cheaper way to do it but oh well, as long as I can talk to him

I spent about the same as Amy. Now we spend about $5 a week. Mo calls home once a week.

I used to spend between $200.00 and $400.00 a month. It was like a pay raise when he got here :star:

That is about what I do but I was thinking, once he gets here won't it be the same since he'll call his family?

I used PINGO to call him while he was in Egypt and I called him A LOT. Now we only spend about $40.00 or less a month. He calls his sisters every Friday or Saturday and talks to his friends online.

I have Vonage. It's 4¢/minute to the UK. Right now our international calls probably total $5 (his parents each call him once a week and his sister calls every two weeks, so he mostly only calls his friends). Before that, when G was over there, he had a thing where he could call me on weekdays for 1p/minute, so I probably only spent about $10 a month because I only called him on weekends and we only ever talked on the phone about twice a week. We did IM/webcam every day.

Over 6 months - calling twice a week for an average of 4 hours each call - spent a total of about $230 (US/Germany). :)

Do you know www.peterzahlt.de? It's only good for 30 minutes at a time, and it's from 6-midnight German time. It's nice though b/c it doesn't matter if you are calling Germany or they are calling you, just put in the German number first. You have to listen to some ads and occasionally you'll get stuck in a queue, but it's worth it at times.

Between google chat, Peterzahlt and my cell phone, I pay around $80 month. I'm not sure what P pays, but it's generally one or two cents per minute.
