I'm giving our SSA office until Monday to hear something, else I'm going to Plan B - contacting the local congressman about it.

I called Yesterday afternoon to the S.S. office of the number I got it from to check on the case status.

 

I am guessing this is good news! I was told the case is pending and it can take 2-4 weeks to get anything in the mail.

 

I guess we did it? Would we get anything in the mail sooner than that? Tell me! I'm thinking of calling again next week to see where it's at because I don't know if it didn't go through or not, and don't wanna accidentally have 2 SSN like we didn't know 1 was coming while filing for AOS.

Update, I called Yesterday and says they are missing 1 more thing and that's an ongoing process and may take another 2-3 weeks as told.

 

I'll probably call again in 2 weeks. How are your plans going and what are the outcome so far? @Spardasa

I called my congressman's office on Monday about it.  The lady took our information/timeline/story, told me this was the first time she had heard of something like this in working there for 10 years, had me fax an authorization form, and would do some checking and following up.  She did say the office I applied at was hard to get information and she'd try getting information from our regional office. 

 

When talking to her, I did make sure to emphasize "a legal immigrant."  She tried doing some quick research on SSA's website, but I told her that honestly, all we want to know if whether my wife is approved or denied, and they can't tell us either answer. 

 

I was slightly surprised when she mentioned the congressman's office having someone who specialized in Immigration as well (since my part of TN just isn't known for having a tremendous immigrant population).  Maybe we'll get lucky and something will finally get broken through?  Who knows.

We got a mail Yesterday saying we'll get my husband his SS card/number within 2 weeks or sooner.

 

That took a while. So TN is really this slow?  Er... it was the Dept of Homeland Security I guess. Mismatch hit hard it seem.

We got the SS card Today and it says social security card valid for work only with DHS authorization.

So that only works if we have the EAD right?

Quick review from start:
Went to the second SSA Office on June 27. Card arrived Today July 27. That's 1 month.
Location: East TN/Athens, and had case of mismatch.

Quick review from start:

And that’s what it should say. Use it with an EAD and you’re fine.

Once actual green card arrives, go back to SSA to remove that line - number remains the same.

From then on, valid DL plus SSN is all you need to show for proof of employment.

Glad it worked out for you! 

 

My husband's I-94 expires in 16 days and we haven't been able to successfully apply for SSN. I can't keep missing work to run over to various SSN offices so we've just had to accept that he won't have an SSN until after his EAD arrives.

So I finally had a call back today from the SSA office we applied at.  The gentleman was apologetic, but is continuously blaming the expiration date on her K1 Visa (Issued in December, 'expired' in May even though she arrived in April, thus null 'n voiding it) as the culprit to the problem.  He kept asking me if she's been sent any new IDs or anything.......which I responded that we've applied for her Adjustment of Status and could send them the NOA and that it would be months until she received her EAD or GC. Then, gives me a non-working fax number. 

 

So now, I must wait till he calls me back to inform him of the non-working fax number.

Actually, just took forever to fax as it was constantly busy.  Finally got a fax through with her NOA.  Let's see how the crapshot continues.

Man, that's crazy but yeah I did hear some quite more issue going on after getting married.

Well, it only works for work if you have EAD (or a GC, but once you have that you can go back to the SSA office and get a card that doesn't have the 'valid for work only with DHS authorization' note on it). But the main reasons to get an SSN ASAP are not work-related; they're to simplify dealing with banks, insurance companies, and government agencies that want to have a social security number.
