I remember reading a professional's opinion on this. The likelihood is that it child molesters, with no outlet for their previous crimes, would become frustrated and would more likely become violent. Child murders, in short, could increase.

Sure - but people don't seem to want even to offer it even as a possiblity. And as more "direct" alternatives are generally illegal at this point, what exactly is the practical alternative - mob mentality brow-beating. Making people so uncomfortable that they up and move to a different town - transplanting the problem for another group of "concerned citizens" to deal with.

Exactly - that's where I was going. All we're doing is transplanting the problem for other people to deal with, and likely at the same time pushing these people to embrace deviant behaviours that they might otherwise be willing to seek help for.

Less "pie in the sky" than your option. I'm just pointing out closing the doors is tantamount to refusing to accept the existence of the problem or find a realistic ways to deal with it (within the law).

I don't think they want to abuse a child. I think they're sooooo sick that they see it as fulfilling their needs (not the child's) and the resulting damage done to the child isn't even an afterthought.

Well part of the reason for that could be that the mob mentality that exists on the part of "concerned citizens" pushes them towards the old behaviours. That's not blame BTW (before anyone decides that it is), just recognising that this is somewhat of a vicious cycle.

As to reasoning - if we're talking about the most extreme SO's (which these discussions usually refer to) the compulsion is invariably psychological - which also explains why rehabilitation is so difficult. Still everyone should at least be given the chance to seek help - in this case preferably within the bounds of a psychological institution. But again - considering the state of easily available public healthcare in the US that isn't really an option either - unless you have a rich father, as people here seem to abhor having their tax money being used for any sort of publicly funded institutions.

Its not really surprising that so many people resorts to the "torches and pitchforks" mentality. But short of a drastic social change "string 'em up" isn't on the cards either.
