I'm sure statutory rape is different...it's still considered a sex offense yet I do see what you're saying. However, the list I check frequently lists the actual offense. Most of them on the list for our area are definately child sex offenses such as molestation, lewd and lacivious acts against children, etc.

Here is a good website that lists sex offenders, maps their location and lists their offenses. I have used this site often in my line of work.

http://www.familywatchdog.us/

I completely understand and agree with parents' concerns about their children having contact with a sex offender. However, one thing to keep in mind is that a charge of statutory rape may be an 18 year old having sex with his 15 year old girlfriend. I have seen that happen before, where a kid does get that charge. To me, there is a huge difference between an 18 and 15 year old having consensual sex and between a 28 year old and 15 year old having sex. Both cases can get a statutory rape charge. However, in the case of the 28 - 15 year old, even if the 15 year old consents to sex, there is such a power differential based on the one being 28, that the sex is not truly consentual. I wish that charges of statutory rape would list the age differential, but they don't.

Thanks for the link! Wow! I just checked it out and found 4 of them near where we live. I think it's a good idea to show pictures of these perpetrators to our kids along with an explanation that they can understand.

Imagine if all those volunteer Minutemen actually spent their time and energy monitoring these ex-cons to stop them if they strike again... what a radical idea.

Here in the county we live in, the sex offender list is precisely that. I've never heard of anyone being charged with a sex offense for public urination unless said offense was done in the presence of a child or children. I'm sure, however, you will find something to substantiate your opinion on this.

I refuse to let my daughter near a known sex offender if I am aware of his or her presence. Ending up on the sex offender registry is pretty accurate IMHO. I'm one of those rare parents that are grateful for such a list. BTW, this link shows the sex offenders in MY area and what their charge is, specifically WHY they're on the sex offender list.

Flame away! I'm sure you will.

Well, it's a good thing they tell you what the offense is. The list is pretty f*cking pointless otherwise.

I'm not even going to address your other points. I get the impression that you think that I am CONDONING giving sex offenders a free pass, just like the OP.

Did you not read the post where I said I had been a victim of sexual assault? The person who did it to me got away with it too, since he was too retarded to be prosecuted. Do you think I feel good about that? Hmmm?

How dare you take the moral high ground with me.

Get over yourself darlin...no one has said OR implied a darn thing. I read your posts...and it sounds like you're implying things about me as well. ####### for tat I say. I'm so very sorry you were abused. Been on the receiving end of that kind of abuse myself believe it or not. I refuse to let it weigh me down but it did shape my opinion of those who are guilty of this kind of crime.

Moral high ground? Oh puhleeeeese. Don't pull that ####### on me. You're just looking for something to argue about. Anything else you have to say to me can be done in PM.

Yeah, but it's probably always been that way; the difference is a couple of decades ago when we were in primary school, we didn't know. When I was a kid my mom let us roam around the neighborhood, but never by ourselves and we were taught all about stranger danger. Unfortunately most child sexual assault victims are attacked by people they know, not by strangers.
