NVC Expedited, In-Transit to Embassy, what's next

Today is a magical day..

I got my email saying my file just arrived in NVC at noon, and an hour later. My expedite request has been approved and In-Transit to US Embassy in Tokyo.

I read a lot of of posts saying get ready for medical and prepare police report, but as far as I read, Japanese police won't issue report and won't be able to schedule medical until my wife gets the packet (something like that?) confirmation.

Any Japanese applicant here can help me a bit about what's next?  I wasn't expecting my case would be at Embassy that early, haven't done any study on embassy part yet.

I did not pay any fee and did not submit any document to NVC. the only thing I know so far is to complete DS-260 online first though. Need some idea on what's next.

First of all, congratulations on such a fast approval and expedition of your case. I'm certainly envious of your getting into that pilot program. We waited 8 months on our NOA2 and were just approved at the embassy in Tokyo last month (she arrives next week!).

We did most of our paperwork, documentation, and other tasks as far in advance as possible in order to speed along each phase. She was able to get the police certificate in Yokohama with a copy of our NOA2 letter, so I think you will be OK to get that. It takes about a week from the initial request to be ready for pickup.

We waited until we had our interview letter to schedule and complete the medical exam, but it turns out we could have done in with the first letter from the NVC with our case number. The email may even be sufficient as long as it has the case number (TKY##########). She completed the medical exam at the Kobe clinic though, so I would have your wife call the clinic she plans to go to for the exam and verify their requirements. A side note about the exam: just get any needed vaccinations at the approved clinic. Some of the required vaccinations are not available at normal Japanese clinics because special licenses are needed in order to carry them. We found this out the hard way and it delayed us getting the medical results by a couple of weeks.

We went through the normal NVC process so everything was paid through CEAC, but the Department of State checklist for the Tokyo Embassy states that if you haven't paid the required fees to the NVC (IV fee and AOS fee), you can pay them at the embassy on the day of the interview in cash (JPY or USD), credit (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, Amex, Diner's Club, JCB), or money order.

Some other things you will need to prepare:

  • Complete the DS-260 online and bring a copy of the confirmation page to the interview.
  • 6 passport-style photos of your wife, 4 for the medical exam and 2 for the interview.
  • I-864 Affidavit of Support (we used my income alone, so we completed I-864EZ) and financial evidence (federal income tax transcripts, W2s, pay stubs, letter of employment). Most evidence is optional, but the most recent year's tax transcript is mandatory. It can take some time to get these if you haven't already set up the online account with the IRS, so do that ASAP. I didn't want to chance an RFE so I included everything. Because we submitted this to the NVC electronically, it was automatically sent to the embassy. Your wife will need to bring it all on the day of the interview.
  • Kekkon-todoke juri shomeisho (marriage certificate), photocopy, and certified English translation (signed statement of accuracy and competency of the translator).
  • Your wife's koseki (birth certificate), photocopy, and certified English translation (signed statement of accuracy and competency of the translator). If she moved to her own koseki after you were married, the koseki-tohon (full version) is fine. If she is still on her parents' koseki it may be easier to use and translate the koseki-shohon (short version). This is the version of the koseki with only her information. In either case, make sure the document you use includes her date and place of birth, as well as parentage.

The embassy should also provide you with a checklist tailored to your case after they receive your case file from the NVC and schedule an interview. This will be a more thorough and accurate list of requirements than above, but this should give you a head start on the more time-consuming items.

The interview day itself was very easy overall (so my wife says). It's mostly waiting. First they will call her to the counter for the paperwork, then she will wait to be called again for fingerprinting, and wait one more time for a 5-10 minute Q&A interview. Here's what my wife was asked:

  • Who is sponsoring you?

  • How did you meet?

  • Who initiated the relationship?

  • What was the initial attraction?

  • What does your husband do for work?

  • Who is his employer?

  • When did you get married?

  • Where did you have your wedding?

  • How many times did you meet in person before getting married?

If you have any other questions I'm happy to help. I know it looks like a lot (and it is), but you're almost out of the woods. Best of luck!
