Yeah. According to the USCIS website it's only good for 150 days. I'd assume this is because you most likely would need immediate benefits after being in the situation, but they believe you could probably start getting on your feet by 5 months.

Also please note that these things aren't something that instantly happens. Sometimes it can take a couple of months to start receiving your benefits depending on your state and the processes they have in place.

Yep. It'll depend on the situation.

I went on food stamps and medicaid shortly after my first husband and I separated and it took a couple of weeks just to schedule an appointment to talk to someone for them to process the case, a couple of weeks to get the card in, and then about a total of a couple of months more before insurance was actually set.

But yeah I 100% agree that they will probably put forth a work program

Welfare in the US was reformed years ago, and now most able-bodied adults are expected to work.

I think in my situation it was different because my daughter was on SSI for disability and I had family who provided checks and statements showing they were paying for my home and electric but not food. This was back in 2015 for me, but I also wasn't receiving Welfare, I was only receiving Food stamps and Medicaid.

But yeah I agree. I have seen plenty of people cheat the system though, a family member of my ex-husband was on welfare... as much as she could be, and she'd just apply for places that she didn't qualify for or find reasons she couldn't work at the places she did get jobs for. She never seemed to get penalized for only working 2 weeks and quitting. She was def able bodied, lived with her parents also on welfare and has like 4 or 5 kids now. They've been riding that train for -years-.

There's also a program called Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, also known as TANF. I believe this is cash assistance but I think it's for people who have children. The OP hasn't disclosed whether he/she has children here in the USA who they're caring for. Again, search for Human Services Department for the state you live in and they can guide you to services that might fit your need, including SNAP and TANF.
