Hi all, I keep asking I-134 Q's sorry :) Anywho, I'm a grad student w/o an income. I'm using my mother as my co-sponsor. She is a retired teacher but is still working part time for the schools. My parents invested well and the intrest is well over the 125% poverty mark, BUT I can't really get a letter showing their income (which aparently the UK embassy wants to see). I was thinking of tax returns and a letter from her employer stating she works part time and previously worked 30 years. Anyone got some advice?

msu,

That investment income does not come to your mother undocumented. Whatever the documentation is, get a copy of it.

My mother is also a retired teacher, and I am going to use her tax returns which show income from her pension. She also gets something similar to a W2, which I will include. Her investement broker provided a letter with the requested accounts information and she included the last few statements from their accounts.

GabachaYucateca,

That "something similar to a W2" is a 1099?

Is there nothing documenting each time a transfer or payment made from the investment account other than the monthly or quarterly account statements? If not, the statements showing the transfers or payments should be sufficient.

There definitely would be, but in the interest of not having to provide stuff from all their accounts, just using the quarterly reports. This is just extra stuff anyway, as she fulfills the 125% of poverty guideline with just her income tax forms.

1099s are used for pensions as well as contractors/freelancers?

GabachaYucateca,

The thing about income tax returns is that they document past income, not current income. If there is no way to document current income - for example the self-employed operating a small personal business - then income tax returns alone will have to do. But if current income can be documented don't be surprised if something more than past tax returns is requested.

1099s are used for all sorts of things. Some other common ones are reporting interest earned on bank accounts and interest paid on mortgage loans.

Yodrak...I'm a bit confused. :) When you say past income, you mean for the prior year, yes?

So if I made enough $ to be a sponsor for the past three years and this appears on my tax returns, that's not sufficient? Oh...wait...do you mean because the tax returns should be accompanied by a current letter from the emplyer, thus documenting that the past income has been sufficient and that the present income will also be (as evidenced in the letter from the employer). So in her case, the quarterly statements on their holding accounts in conjunction with a letter from the VP of USB...or UBS...or whatever, could take the place of a letter from an employer, which obviously she no longer has?

GabachaYucateca,

Yes, past income means income received in prior years.

Last year's income does not pay today's and tomorrow's bills (unless it was saved and is still on hand as some sort of asset that can generate or be turned into cash). So yes again, having made enough money during the last 3 years is not sufficient. One needs to be making enough money now, with a showing that one will continue making enough money into the future.
