Form I-134

So thanks to all the great help from you all my Fiancee and I are on the final steps. The consulate of Brazil already contacted them and they just need a couple things before the final interview. on form I-134 it asks about employment and income, which brings me to my issue.

I am currently pursuing my education further, and still officially employed. I have my job, boss is holding it, on "student leave" basically, but i do not work and earn no money while college is in session, only in my months off of school do i work. the form wants to know about my annual income, which changes a lot based on my work schedule and classes etc etc. so should i calculate what i would be making each year if i did not have classes to account for? or should i try to calculate as best i can where i would be for this year so far? or should i not even say that i am employed (i still get all benefits from work, just no paycheck since i am not actually working).

Also, when asking about Value of Personal Property, beyond the large obvious things like a house or vehicle, is there anything i should calculate? do i need to try to find the value of everything added up like computer, cellphone, fridge, etc, or just the big basics like a home and car?

and finally, it asks about people dependent on me, and if i intend to make financial contributions to help support them during their stay here. now i understand that this is a multi-purpose form used for more than just people looking for a K1 visa, but would i list my Fiancee as a dependent, or is this just for people who are already in the US as my dependents such as children? and i would assume that i do not need to say i am going to make financial contributions, since my Fiancee will be living with me?

thanks so much for all the help, and sorry for some of these questions, i am just super paranoid and want to be sure i am not messing up anything.

You would state your current annual income. This is how much you make in a 12 month period at this time, not what it will be in the future, was in the past, or could be if the circumstances were different.

You will likely need either substantial assets or a co sponsor since you have no to little qualifying income.

Assets are optional. You only need to list assets that you want considered. All appropriate documentation of each asset must be included, including net value, ownership, etc. Assets must be convertible to cash within a 12 month period and without causing hardship.

As such, things with a substantial net value (bank accounts and other financial accounts,. a second car, a house, etc.) are the only things to look at. Things like a computer, cellphone, etc. are not substantial.

You can answer yes and explain that it is a K-1 visa. Although, it really isn't impactful on the result.

Your dependents would be yourself, anybody being sponsored, any unmarried children under 21 (or age of majority), anybody you've sponsored in the past with an active I-864, and anybody else you've listed on your most recent year's tax returns as a dependent.

I think I saw something similar to this in another thread.  Same kind of thing, the petitioner was going back to school, etc., minimal (if any) income for a while.  Especially if this education will yield a significant bump in salary it is very enticing.  Is it likely to lead to a much better salary?  How long is it going to take to finish?  Have you considered if this is the right timing for pursuing this education?  If the likelihood is you will be earning the same... or only a little bit more... after this education is completed is it really worth it?

Your fiancee (soon-to-be spouse) will be earning the null set for a while.  Won't even be able to get a job at Target.  I don't know if your fiancee brings a particular skills set that could earn a good salary when she is eligible to work.  What is your fiancee's level of English?  Would she be coming into a crowded, competitive industry here in the states?

How will you put food on the table while you are pursuing this education?  How do you pay for utilities, clothing, etc.?

As for assets, got any money in a 401k?  You'll need to have something that will get you over that hump or you'll need the largesse of another who is willing to serve as a co-sponsor.

Previous posters have summed up the situation pretty good. Annual income and any substantial assets. Also, the I-134 is only used for K-1 visas. I know that other visas such as the spousal visa use another form You may end up having to get a co-sponsor to help you bring your fiancee to the USA.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

i am already about 1/2 way through the extra education, which will almost certainly help me land a better paying position, so at this point it would be really counter productive to just stop and go back to work full time. paying expenses off of savings and paychecks i do still collect in the months i  am able to work. i have no clue what expenses will look after marriage, rough ideas but nothing exact. if it comes down to it, i can take a loan or something, but trying to avoid debt.

in terms of a co-sponsor, if i did end up deciding that this would be helpful, where would i list them on the form? would i just fill out a second form with their information and send in both forms? would i use just their form and not my own?

I believe that you would have each sponsor fill out an  I-134.
