Hey,

so i'm nowhere near this stage - but i like to get ahead haha.

So i know you dont need to be formally engaged with a ring as such just intent to get married (and then actually follow through within 3 mths).

But, what if at the interview they ask to see an engagement ring or ask when you became engaged? Can i just say something like 'we were verbally engaged on "such a such" date so i dont have an engagement ring yet'?

I just dont want to say the wrong thing to where they think im not going to get married after entering the states. haha.

thank you kindly!

They won't.  You're interviewing through Sydney, right?  You could update your letters of intent to marry (with current date), but no ring is necessary.

Engaged is not a legal status and is just a personal decision by couples to enter into marriage. Many people don’t have a ring, party, Facebook status update, etc.

In some African and Asian cultures engagements are a huge event but for most English-speaking countries it’s a non-event. I couldn’t even tell you what date we decided to get married. It was just a natural progression in the relationship. This is my second marriage and I’ve never had an engagement ring, or wanted one, with either marriage. To me, personally, they are a bit old-fashioned or twee.

If the female K-1 applicants at the embassy on the day you have your interview are anything like the group of K-1 applicants who were at the London embassy when I had my spousal visa interview, you will face more questioning from them about the ring, how much it cost, how romantic the proposal was, etc than from the officer him/herself.

If it makes you feel better I don’t have a ring either and am not one bit worried about it! Although I am the petitioner.

No engagement ring here!  She didn't even know what it was.  In fact where she grew up the few married people didn't have wedding rings.  Rings and such were never brought up at the interview.

BTW I did give her a wedding band that she really liked.   Almost everything I have given her, to date, she has worn once and put in a box.  Couple of grand in the box.  The exception being an inexpensive globe necklace from Amazon (already replaced twice) and some hoop earrings from a drugstore in Montreal.

If asked about it, just be honest because as everyone has said above, rings don't matter. I doubt they will even ask about the ring, but they will probably ask when you got engaged. I interviewed at Sydney and it was very stress-free and easy. They asked me when I got engaged, but didn't ask me about my ring.
