Hi all

my girlfriend is a school teacher in the UK. She is interested in working as a tutor for one or more families here in the U.S. (where I reside). She speaks four languages fluently.

Would she be responsible for the work Visa itself or is that something that the tutoring agency or family might be able to take care of?

she is also open to being a nanny if that helps her chances at all.

Any advice on how realistic this plan is?

just trying to be proactive and find a strategy going forward

She'd need some kind of J1 visa (au pair rather than nanny, and she could certainly tutor as part of an au pair job description). She would need to find a sponsor. There are agencies that match au pairs with host families.  Link posted already above.

There may be other options under J1 too, it's fairly broad. If she has a formal teaching qualification that will help - there are J1 sponsors for teachers. Here is an official website with a list of designated sponsors https://j1visa.state.gov/participants/how-to-apply/sponsor-search/

Sorry.

if you call it an au pair and an exchange visa, then yes there is!

But is the teacher program for people who want to teach in schools? Or does it extend to private tutors as well?

No-one is going to spoon feed you... I gave you a link with a list of a wide variety of sponsors in a wide variety of fields. Have you looked at it to see who the sponsors are and looked at the other links to see what the requirements of the various programs are?

if she wants to get a visa she may have to be flexible on what she does.
