So I am going to Ghana in July and I was wanting to take a little something for my fiance's parents and since he is totally clueless (as am I) about this I was wanting to ask you all for your opinions.

I have met only his mom before (briefly) but this was before we started 'going out'. This would be the first time I would visiting with them as their future daughter-in-law  .

I really don't have any ideas so any and all would be helpful.

Thanks in advance!!

Zee :)

I would suggest a nice top like a shirt or blouse, perfume or what about a

digital cam that is reasonably priced.

A small light weight item so it wont take up much space in the suitcase.

If there are younger males in the family or children it is nice to bring some

candy, T-shirts and especially mini flashlights or other little inexpensive

gadgets.

There always seemed to be someone for whom I wished I had a gift when I was introduced to them.

It seems one gift for just one person won't do when going to Africa.

I have taken a bunch of Mary Kay cosmetic products that a friend of mine had given me. ( Avon is good too) She went out and asked her fellow sellers to donate samples to her and they did. For children, I bought fancy markers, pens and stickers. For the teen boys I made copies of music "hip-hop" for them. Basically anything that I could get a bunch of for less money, I took with. Relatives and friends appeared out of nowhere to meet me and I felt bad having others stand around while I produced gifts for the people I knew.

The longer it takes to introduce yourself the less you've actually accomplished

My first official meeting of my Naija family I went to this really cheap jewelry store called Pierced Pagoda and got my Mom In law a necklace and bracelet set for like 50 bucks and I got my sis in law a anklet for 20 bucks my male in laws I got like flash drives for their comps and liquor is always a sure crowd pleaser! The jewelry there is really nice and looks more expensive than it it. If there is no Pierce pagoda in your area just go to the local mall and look in the little booths in the center of them they always have really nice stuff. Good luck! I wish I could be traveling home to see mommy soon I miss her so much.

Pictures and picture frames. Clothing. Inexpensive electronic gadgets. I got Ben's mom a solar powered flashlight that she loves and has to hide from the rest of the family or they'll take it!! I also brought her cooking utensil--an oven mitt, etc. His brothers loved t-shirts and hats from my school and local sports teams. Postcards of your city. Calculators. Candy (chocolate if you can it it there without melting). Perfume is a great idea too. A nice wallet for older males.

Love the ideas!!!

Thanks :)

Ok depending on where you live. If youlive in a big metropolitant like say New york, Jersey or any other area with a huge population then visit any of the Ghana stores and by the lady a piece of cloth. In Ghana that is how we treat our in-laws especially the mothers. She will love. You can get one for $60-$100.

For valentines day I sent my future mother-in-law some perfume from Victoria Secret. You can order it from online. I also sent the brothers and sisters and uncles and aunts something from Victoria Secret. Then to make sure I got everyone something I bought candies, frito's, and basic snack from the U.S. If you go online you will see Victoria Secret has something for everyone men and women and the prices are like you want them. They can range from $3 items to $50 or $60 items. And I have even tried some of the less expensive items and I love them all. Especially the body lotions. The good thing about Victoria Secret is they have small size items that are easy to travel with. Hope this helps and have a wonderful trip.

Nobody has said this yet...but money is always a hit with them. I think they prefer that more than anything. I know for American culture it is soooo "uncool" but the culture there they will LOOOOOVVVVEEEE you long time!!! Their eyes will light up sooo BIG!!!! They will kiss and hug you so tight! When I 1st went I asked my mom in law what she wanted and she named some big ticket items like a cell phone, a suit, etc. If this is your 1st time meeting them take my advise, don't buy anything big because they will always expect something from you. Maybe you can wait til you get there and go to the market and buy something there. They tend to think ALL of us Americans are rich. I wish that I had known the way of their thinking before.
