My fiancé has a very long middle name & last name . It seems like on documents the last name now includes both these & it’s going to be a pain to live with such a long last name. He’ll be coming to US next month on k1 but when is the ideal time to change the name ? He wants to remove his middle name to make everyone’s life easier. But is it better to do it before AOS or after getting GC ?

You can legally change your last name  without extra court procedures either on these two:

1. Marriage - when you apply for marriage license, you’ll be ask if you want to retain your both current last name or change it. We did omit my husband’s second last name as it was too long too.

2. During naturalization - by simply filling in your chosen new name on USCIS Form N-400 (the Application for Naturalization)

Need to check what your chosen state of marriage allows.  Not every state is the same.  Some allow no name changes, some allow the woman to change only the last name and a few allow both parties the ability to change any or all three names.

YMMV

If my state does allow him to change while applying for marriage license will that affect the AOS process as the name is going to be different in passport
