I do realize the majority of these illegals are Mexicans, but can we please stop acting like they are the only ones doing this sort of thing. Quit generalizing please. The only reason they are labeled Mexicans is because the color of their skin. Just because they look Mexican doesn't mean they are. Let's all remember they are Latinos. Now, continue on please.

The only reason they are labeled Mexicans is because the color of their skin.

No, it's because a majority of them are from Mexico. 57%, according to the Pew Hispanic Center. If you resolve the problem with illegal immigration from Mexico, you end up with a much smaller problem.

Makes perfect sense to attack the problem at the Mexican border.

If you read the first line of my post I said I realize the majority of them are Mexicans, but they all aren't. Most of the posts in this thread have been directed at Mexicans. I was just pointing out they aren't all Mexicans. I guess most people think it is okay to call them Mexicans even if they are from Guatamala, Honduras, or any other Central American country. If that is the mentality of the people in this thread, that is exactly why I have stayed out of it until now. So, as I said before, carry on.

Again, Mexicans are the largest group by far. By saying that this is also a Honduran problem, you are only trying to obfuscate the issue.

My husband, the immigrant, who holds 2 degrees and one technical certificate from the UK, just took a job in a grocery store to get himself established in America.

He waited four months to get his legal work authorization (EAD) for that 'privilege'. Even 2 months after that, he was still getting stymied by employers in our area partly because he doesn't have the 'green card' (in case you don't already realize it, John Q. Public hasn't a CLUE about immigration).

So he's starting at the bottom. Just like the legals who registered at Ellis Island 150 years ago did. To prove that he has a work ethic and that he is no better than the rest of us - and also to prove that just because he is an immigrant he doesn't think he might be entitled to a free ride - like the bad press over the weekend shows.

His employer is paying him the legal rate - not some under-the-table wage. They will withhold his taxes and pay his social security. They have a copy of his EAD on file.

No free passes. Not for him - not for the rest of them, I say.

Health care? That's a WHOLE OTHER topic.....that's a crisis for the poor working citizenry as well as the immigrant community.

Broken health-care system or not: I am responsible for my immigrant wife. An employer that sponsors an employee from outside the US ought to be held to account just as I am held to account for my spouse.

OK - well if that idea sucks, then what else do we have? What is the solution?

Shut down the border.

Increase costs to businesses that want to employ illegals. More raids. More fines. More oversight.

So.....more money, more government, more process

What do we get in return exactly? I'm forgetting.....

No, not more money, more gov't, more process. A secure border, criminal businesses indicted and convicted, scammers sent on their way. We get in return: Fair pay for legal workers, more tax revenues from that legal workforce, significantly less of a burden on the tax-payer funded public health care system [does it ever bother you that the one sneaking across the border illegally gets health care at no cost while your legally immigrating fiance(e) or spouse won't get the same benefit? You're on the hook for that but no employer harboring and employing illegals is ever made to pay for #######!], less burden on public schools, lower auto insurance rates (due to less uninsured drivers), and the list goes on...

A secure border? Never

Crminialize business - I agree but you need people to enforce = Money

Fair pay for legal workers - we already have that

Public Health care system....less burden - Do you really think that Joe Farmer is going to start offering health insurance? Is Mr. Janitor going to get benefits all of a sudden? Who is paying for these benefits? What about the thankfull Americans who are now working for minimum wage on the farm.....are they getting benefits too! Awesome.....I'm sure the price of products won't go up either after paying higher wages, health insurance, etc.

I can't wait until we have 20 million Americans working for minimum wage.....we'll all be rich! Health care will be affordable, insurance rates will go down (because I'm sure they will all have auto insurance).

Best of all, this whole plan won't cost a thing to implement!

Sorry for the sarcasm......I'm just not seeing all of these benefits to us.

No I am not. I am just simply trying to get people to see the bigger picture. Sorry you have a problem with that. I think there is a legitamate problem also. I was just trying to get people to see that it isn't just Mexicans. I can see I am talking to a brick wall here so that's fine. You just keep calling them whatever you want. You just keep thinking that all illegals are Mexicans and that it's all their fault. Next time I have a problem with something I will try to find one particular nationality to blame it on. That's a real adult way of looking at things. You people really amaze me sometimes.

your missing his point. He's focusing on fixing the Mexican portion of the problem first, because they are the largest group. You can make the largest impact on everything by dealing with them first.

the change is bad... but could be worse.. would still hold people accountable for helping them except in humanitarian cases... so employing them would still be illegal.

The Senate Judiciary Committee adopted an amendment by Sen. ####### Durbin, D-Ill., that would protect church and charitable groups, as well as individuals, from criminal prosecution for providing food, shelter, medical care and counseling to undocumented immigrants.

"Charitable organizations, like individuals, should be able to provide humanitarian assistance to immigrants without fearing prosecution," Durbin said.

Fact is, as someone stated, the majority of illegal aliens ARE Mexicans. They're not picking on mexicans, they're just using them as an example because they are the majority of illegal aliens. much easier than saying illegal canadians venezuelans english south africans etc.

The consumer pays for everything. Always. Don't look now but you are already paying for them. With your taxes and through your insurance premiums. Or who do you think pays for the emergency room visits and for the public health system that all those w/o insurance and w/o funds fall back on?

There's a difference between an American falling back on the public support system and an employer effectively bringing in a alien that he dumps on that same system all the while making huge profits off of that scheme. That's part of the cost of illegal employment. And I, for one, don't care to pay for it.

Besides, as I quoted earlier, 75% or better of the workforce in the "traditional" illegal fields are actually legal employees. That means that 75% or better of the businesses can work and produce competitively within the law. The other 25% are either incompetent or greedy or a combination of the two. If they're not able to compete legally, then they ought to close up shop and leave the field to those that can.

Legal labor means more expensive meat my patoot!

Going forward, all instances of the word Mexican in this thread should be replaced with the following:

"Mexican/Honduran/Guatamalan/Nicaraguan/Costa Rican/Bolivian/Venezuelan/Brazilian/Uranian/Polish/Pakistani/Bangladeshi/Indian/Chinese/Philipino/Cambodian/Nigerian"

Anyone who fails to comply will be shot.
