I've posted my thoughts on all of this on other threads and promised the hubby not to talk much about it cuz IT PISSES ME OFF SO MUCH!!!

Over the weekend here in NY there were protests and every single person interviewed said the same thing: how they SNUCK into this country either by crawling under fences in Texas and California, or by truck etc... That wasn't bad enough but almost every sign they were holding up in protest was in Spanish!!

Now before you all come down on me... let me state my problem:

Yes maybe there should be easier ways for people to be able to get into this country but I'm not the person to talk about that... All I know is that like everyone else here on VJ we are struggling day after day minute by minute being separated by the ones that we love. And thats because what? Europe isn't as close to the US as Mexico so they can't SNEAK in??

But my real issue is this. These people want into America soooo badly.. have a better life for them and their children. Great. LEARN THE FREAKING LANGUAGE!!!! Last time I checked ENGLISH was our national language... If you can't read write or speak English when you get here then learn!!

I know there will posters who strongly oppose my feelings on this but I can't help it. You go to the DMV and everything is on English plus Chinese, Spanish and here in NYC Russian. Am I wrong but aren't our street signs in English? How in the world can you drive in America if you can't speak English (and I'm not talking about road signs that are mostly universal shapes).

Yes I'm aggrevated cuz its been 8 months since our wedding and we are separated. But we are doing things legally and please don't say well we can afford to and not everyone can't. Thats not an answer. A crime is a crime and sneaking into the country well... its a crime. Granted I don't equate it to rape and murder and the like but all the same... Put it this way.. erm why are these people SNEAKING in ?? Because they feel they don't need to go through the legal process the way the rest of us are doing. And now they may get amnesty?? HELLO???? All because people need their cleaning girls and cooks and such....

See.. this is why I promised him I wouldn't post... LOL (Deep breaths)

u'll see.. approved or not approved.. family visa is gonna stay the same..

PWNED..

Pedro,

You should really reserve the use of "PWNED" for when you actually address the argument.

What does that mean? PWNED?

It means Pedro owns you by virtue of the fact that he demolished you in debate.

You are now property of El Presidente.

Here's an article that discusses the biases in the immigration system. Pedroh is right that the official quotas have been abolished, but racial selectivity continues on. A primary example is the lottery which was originally instituted to increase the number of European immigrants from certain countries, but race also plays a role in the approval rates of visa application in family and work related immigration.
dude.. common sense.. just ask around.. a visa from a nice european country takes a lot less than a eastern european country(a.k.a commie countries for americanos) and latin american countries.. and asian countries take forever compared to latin american countries..
Isn't that what I said?

But is that not countering the argument that the differences are race-based? A Polish or Czech person, for example, is arguably a lot "whiter" than your Spanish or Italian folks. Yet the former have a harder time obtaining a visa than the latter. ;)

Asia vs. Latin America? Contrary to the above generalization, I believe the article pointed out that Japan (which hasn't been moved from Asia as far as I know) has one of the highest success rates in visa applications. 97% if I recall correctly. Much better than any of the Latin American countries I'm sure. ;)

This is VJ. We read so many horror stories from the Embassy at Ho Chi Minh City that Vietnam turns into "Asia" ;)

Right. And that allows to put the "racist" stamp on the process. Bull$hit! The inequalities are based on historical fact. The fact that many Vietnamese visa applicants either obtained their visa fraudulently or decided not to honor the terms of the privilege that was extended to them. Or many Ethiopians. My wife comes from usch country and I know that there are scores of people willing to do anything to get a ticket to the US. Anything. And the Consulate is tasked to distinguish between those that would and those that won't. They err on the side of caution and many people that truly don't want anything but an opportunity to visit will be denied. Not because of racist motivations but because of a clear behavioral pattern that their fellow countrymen and women have kindly established.

I'd like to have my MIL come over for a few weeks when our baby is born. This would be huge for Nani and me. Yet we know that the odds are clearly against that happening. Is that the fault of the Consular staff in Addis Ababa? No. It's the fault of the many Ethiopians who went to that Consulate asking for visitor visas, were granted the privilege to travel to the US and were never seen again. Ain't got a thing to do with race...

I agree with you, dude. Chillax.

Just makes me angry when people pull the race card where it clearly isn't appropriate.

That happens when they don't like the answer they get and decide to make it personal against them to force the others hand in their favor. And no, it's not appropriate.

You're right except for one small thing: just because we're going through immigration he11 doesn't mean we should wish the same on other people.

The House Bill is a prime example of election year politics without any sense of reality. It doesn't do anything to reform what is wrong with the immigration system but instead focuses exclusively on immigration enforcement. You can be certain that the House as always is big with words but unwilling to provide enough money to try and sentence 1000 illegal workers a year, let alone go after the companies who hire illegals.

I don't wish anyone hell. I just wish they follow the freakin law like I have. Yes immigration enforcement is lacking. If we used the manpower and money we have used to secure the border in Iraq to secure our own border illegal immigration would just about dry up.
