My ring finger is longer but I suck at math.

I just heard on the radio that if your ring finger is longer than your index finger, you're more math inclined. My ring finger's longer, and I'm a math person. How about you?

Exam success in maths and English could quite literally be at a child’s fingertips, according to a study published today.

Seven-year-olds whose ring fingers are longer than their index fingers are likely to excel at maths, while those with shorter ring fingers are more adept at reading and writing, researchers say.

The authors say there is a clear link between differences in the relative size of the two fingers, which indicate a child’s exposure to hormones in the womb, and their performance in numeracy and literacy tests.

The findings, by researchers at the University of Bath, add to growing evidence that shows the length of the ring finger relative to the index finger can offer clues to the biological influences that shape an individual’s body and mind. On a female hand, the index finger is longer than the ring finger or the same size, whereas men usually have a longer ring finger.

The difference may only be fractions of millimetres, but is widely thought to reflect differences in the body’s exposure and response to testosterone and oestrogen in the womb, and the effect that this may have on brain development and finger length.

The study, to be published in the British Journal of Psychology, compared the finger lengths of 75 children at a school in Bath with their Standard Assessment Test scores.
