Sorry if the answer is on here, I Googled a few different things and didn't find it...

Long story short... entered on my k1, got married 5 days later. Then applied for SSN number... Received the attached letter at the SS office.

As I've already started an application should I answer 'No' to question 14 on the i-765? ("Do you want the SSA to issue you a social security card?")

If you actually receive an SSN card in the mail then answer No.  We tried and failed 2x via the Manassas SSA office, takes about 1 month for each attempt to get irreparably stuck.  If I were in your shoes, I would wait until you either have the card in-hand or you've hit that 30 day mark and followed-up with that local office to see if its stuck.

Yeah, that's my dilemma. I realise from reading on here what a (removed) show some SSA offices are BUT I also don't want to wait another 30 days to file my AOS package. 🤔

They did mention at the SSA that they were having a problem with the system all day. So fingers crossed its been resolved since and it's not a problem with finding me on the system.

Our problem was that the SAVE/SEVIS response to the SSA was not sufficient for them to issue a card. Something was busted on the DHS side.  Usually it's a 48hr pitch-and-catch and u get a card in less than 2 weeks.  You can, if you're really itchy, call the local SSA office or visit them in a few days and just see where things stand.  The national line can't see local applications.

First few calls we had to fight through the canned answer because some of the phone staff couldn't be bothered to look (you could hear the silence of their keyboards as they said "oooohhh nope, nothing yet").  There was 1 lady that was particularly helpful and knew how the computers worked in painstaking detail, highly competent and professional. Some of the other staff, including a manager, not so much (in fact I said to him "So I'd like to speak with your manager" and he said "I am the manager"... "Ok well you work for someone and that's who I want to speak to now").  So, yeah like that show you know of....

You can always request a card on the I765 even if you've applied for one and haven't received it. (And even if you have received one in your maiden name, you'll be applying for a replacement in the married name on the I765). They arent going to issue you two different SSNs as your SSN number is tied to your name and backed up by your parent's names/DOBs so there is zero chance they will issue you a second number and will just issue a second card.

Always take advantage of the I765 SSN application offer if you dont have your original card yet (or your married name card). There is no crime in it and it will save you a step in having to personally visit SSA if by chance this one doesnt come and you declined the offer on the I765.
