I often opined about that with some of the MDL past members.  Trump is far more moderate than Pence, but I suppose it has something to do with the color of the grass on the other side.  Another thought is they think they can still nullify 2016 getting rid of Trump, Pence, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh et.al, and place Hillary in the WH.  smh.

The difference between the turncoat Dean and the current situation is that no one, whether charged or questioned during this coup attempt, has offered to turn state's evidence in order to save his own skin.  Rush or someone else observed, some time ago, "We might have inadvertently elected the cleanest President possible."
