Hi all, been completely AWOL ...in brief,  husband steadily declined in health from last I was here. Been in hospital all that time,  save for 3 days at the end of the first week.

Doctors delivered the news we didn't want yesterday, there's no more to be done for him so we likely have a few days or so.

Madness! Seriously you guys, hold your loved ones tight, make sure they know you love them, take time in each & every day together. Life is too short & all too often even shorter than we would hope for.

I have no idea what this means in terms of where I end up but not that it matters, wherever I am if I can't be with my husband.

Sorry, yet again for bringing folks down.

Oh no I didn't even see this. I'm so sorry...

They're so pretty.

We had an allotment in England (I don't know if you know what that is. You can rent land off the council, a plot, and grow food and keep chickens. It's a good way to live semi-sustainably if you don't have much land, which most people don't). We never kept chickens because I couldn't bring myself to kill them, but I respect anyone that can actually do that. It's kind of more honorable to eat what you raise and nurture than buy meat that's neatly packaged.

Allotments have a culture of old retired men that are way in to growing the biggest vegetables and use pesticides and don't approve of organic (which we were). So I kept to myself there as they would offer unwanted advice and be critical if I allowed them to. But I always wanted to know - is it cost effective to raise chickens? Apart from the value of having them and nurturing them and the pleasure it brings you. How much do you spend on their feed compared to how many eggs they produce?

In Canada you can rent Crown land for things like that.

Right now the chickens pay for themselves with the eggs we sell. We sell 22 plus dozen a month at 4$ a dozen and their feed is 18$ every two weeks.

Now the ducks they are more freeloaders atm. This is the first week we started getting eggs. Seems I now have two eggs layers so the rest should not be far behind.

Was it a steep learning curve or had you researched a lot?

So...That's 22 dozen times 4...what's that about 20 bucks? Comes out to like 8 cents an egg?

I'm good in math I tell ya...

I did research because I like to know what I'm getting into. Plus living in city limits I had to make sure I didn't get into trouble. This city is one of the few that have pretty weird laws for chicken keeping. But really it's pretty easy now that we have it down pat.

I have a sign out in the yard, around here and honesty box would get stolen. Heck someone stole my garbage can one day and it was junk.
