What did you do when you first got work here?

Perhaps I can get a job as a bag-packer or shelf-stacker at a store.

Husband washed windows and then worked overnights at Lowe’s before he retrained and got a career type job.

I know. My first one there went well. This one they had either made up their mind one way or another from the start. At least we got some laughs out of it. It just felt perfunctory.

Personally I would not do the GED. You did go to school and complete school. Make your own transcripts as a homeschool student as accurate as you can remember. As a mother who homeschooled 4 kids two have already graduated from University and 1 still going and still homeschooling my youngest 2 . A homeschool transcript and diploma are looked at much better than a GED. Michigan has a decent homeschool population they should be more familiar with that.

@fip & jim

Agree !!  Many .. but thankfully not all ....“Professional “ educators .. note rolling of eyes and shaking of head .. understand their language only .. poor poor people .. and think that are the only ones who can educate properly .. more rolling eyes and shaking head .. Google  Home School graduation certificate , get onto word or publisher , and go for it. As long as it contains the “magic words” , that’s all they want... unspoken words, mumbling and grunts inside head !!

Our daughter was told she needed to attend the University open day and speak to the veterinary medicine course advisor as, naturally, a home schooled person had no way to enter one of Australia’s top universities!  So attend she did .. saw the advisor ( from across the room ), spoke to her “ excuse me .. can you tell me if this is the most up to date information ?” ... and duly wrote in her application cover letter that she had “ attended the open day, spoke with the course advisor , who had been very helpful “. Daughter is now 38, been a qualified veterinarian in 3 countries, licensed in 5 US states, clinical practice for 12 years , USDA veterinarian medical officer for 3.

Give them the words and they’ll be able to tick their box. Hope things go better for you .. let’s know  how it’s going !!

Not reviewing math.

Wallowing in self-pity and annoyed at feeling self-pity.

Thought new, shiny New World job was in the bag.

Not so.

They want transcripts of my education.

No can do due to aforementioned unfortunate luck of being born in doomsday cult.

Left home at 17 to be free of stupid doomsday cult and all certificates of education lost henceforth.

Parents shunned me.

Parents dead.

All paper records lost.

Not such a problem when back home as people knew this and knew I was a top-notch student that attended a top-notch school and did my best.

Struggling to know how to explain this strangeness to strangers.

Worked over 10 years in my field and hope a reference from my last employer will show how qualified I am, but also being realistically pessimistic.

Hi just popping in - I'm very sorry to hear this has happened to you. I take it you were homeschooled until your last year or you did some A levels? I was too myself for all years. I have no transcripts or official records to speak of except for a diploma. The ability to get transcripts will really all depend on if you were 'fully' home-taught or even 'unschooled' or were homeschooled via a home education program the parents used. Michigan does have a huge homeschooling community and advocates in the state though, so I am surprised of you encountering this hurdle with this job... would have thought it to be something to have experienced in my neck of the woods actually (it's been many a time since I encountered disrespect about my education) to point whatever little 'mock' certificates you make get looked on with scorn. That being said, when my husband applied for his job, it also stated they wanted his educational records - but at the interview they took him at his word, and he is well overqualified anyway. It would have been hard to explain to an American about A-levels or even how his BA is an advanced program degree so it is an equiv of a MA (with the option to go to PhD!) Anyway... there is no harm in a GED, I've often thought about doing that myself - but I would have thought in Michigan for it to be not needed as much. Homeschoolers are everywhere!

Why would any employer at your age care about high school? I haven't ever been asked about that.

The Dane did a GED when he moved here. No one has ever cared and it was just fine for admission to community college.

Strange enough I've seen and experienced employers that have done this before. Depends on the field of work. In the OP's case they are being unusually stubborn about it. She sounds like they are well qualified.

So did you put down that you graduated high school?  Because I would have done that regardless. Only time I think it is ok to fudge this sort of thing.

I’ve told this story before, but I started college before I graduated high school. I failed calculus my senior year, they wouldn’t graduate me.... so they gave me the diploma after I retook it my first year of college. No one was the wiser.

What kind of counseling degree are you going for?

Me (playing the part of librarian with the sexy English accent in this scenario) - "Why, yes I can! I have excellent recall and organisational skills. They are in the Landscape Architecture section, numbered Many.Many. (2+2+2+1, 1 , 2+2).
