NO, only the most recent tax year is of concern. Just attach a written statement why you were exempt from filing, even people who make very little are required to file returns even though no taxes are taken.

You may want to refer to the IRS to see if you had to file in 04

SEE: http://www.irs.gov/faqs/faq2-1.html

Even if you do not have to file, you should file a federal income tax return to get money back if any of the following apply:

1. You had income tax withheld from your pay.

2. You qualify for the earned income credit.

3. You qualify for the additional child tax credit.

You Look good

A letter from employer would not hurt to have also.

Basically, your employer letter should state "To whom it may concern: (first name, last name) has been employed full-time with the XYZ Company since 200_ as a (name of your job), and is an employee in good standing with an annual salary of $XXXX. Signed, John Doe, Supervisor (or whatever title)" The letter should be on company letterhead.

You would attach a letter citing the IRS code that exempted you from filing, not simply YOUR REASON for not filing. If not exempt then either file the taxes or ignore 2004 altogether. Not owing tax is not the same thing as exempt from filing.

Oh cool... I'll probably be in the exact same situation (unless things get delayed until next tax return, God forbid). Good thing I try to keep up with these forums so by the time I have the same question, I'll already know the answer. :) Searching the forums can be tedious sometimes.

Hmmm.. I was in Jordan and unable to file 2006. I didn't put in for an extension either. I will look into filing now..even if its late. I know that my income alone does not meet the requirements.. so my parents will also be sponsors and report their income/tax returns. Only thing is they did not need to file 04 and 05 due to income was tax-free (Soc.Sec., VA, Disability). This is what they explained to me.. yearly income was over 23k for them. Any advice or info you can give me on this. Thanks

If the tax code didn't require them to file taxes, then they provide a letter citing that tax code. It would also be good to provide the income verification showing the income was of a nature that fits the codes cited.
