Did your SO's friends treat them differently ?

During the process and especially when it was looking like they'd really be going to the US, did your SO's friends start treating them differently?

My husband had two dear, or so he thought, friends that suddenly turned stone cold on him. He has a friend who immigrated from Egypt to Canada and he warned him that something like this would happen but he really is bummed about it because he used to hang out with these guys all the time.

I have to say no. All of Gary's friends were very supportive of him and his decision. A few even told him they were jealous.

I'm sorry to hear your husband's friends have turned the cold shoulder on him :( Did your husband's friend who immigrated to Canada say why this would happen? I'm just curious

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Well it was different for each one. One was jealous that he actually was married and would be leaving. I think he was just sad and instead of talking through it, like a girl would lol, he just stopped talking to him. Another actually was ticked off that he wasn't marrying an Egyptian. He doesn't exactly dislike me but he does not like the US at all.

Not really one theme going on but definitely losing some friends. :(

That's sad. Pity they are being like that instead of supporting him and being happy for him.

My fiance's friends think he's got a freat deal( that's me) and a great opportunity and really happy for him :)

I had a chance to meet with them while visiting Israel and they all seemed like nice guys :)

The only person who is not happy about him leaving is his brother but that's something he'll have to deal with and hopefully sooner than later he'll realize that it was done for love.

His brother likes me for my fiance but he thinks there are plenty of local girls and no need to travel that far :(

Oh well, hopefully his brother will understand that sometimes things happen out of control and neither my fiance neither i planned something like that ( when we just met) It was purely friendship that grew into much more.

Her friends were all very jealous and kept asking her if her fiancé could also find them an American boyfriend (even the already married ones).

It's jealousy pure and simple. Whether they admit it or not, most Egyptians would give their left arm to leave. This is mostly due to economic reasons. Most Egyptian (Muslims) don't care whether or not their friends or family marry an American or an Egyptian (or whatever). It's really just an excuse for the fact that they're so jealous they can't see straight. This jealousy also shows itself in the form of negative comments about the US and horror stories about the US and Americans (the women in particular). This is not only an observation on my part but an observation on my Egyptian husband's part and other Egyptians I know.

Mo's true friends were cool with him but his casual friends and acquaintanences were not. There was a time after the interview when he wouldn't go out unless it was for work or to buy something for the home. As you know, Egyptians are very big on the "evil eye". He had a fear of this since so many ppl reacted negatively out of jealousy. It's sad that ppl are so desperate that they're consumed with jealousy this way.

It is VERY sad! Hubby had asked one of his dearest friends....a man that he insisted I meet right after we married and who we spent an entire day with, to help him translate one of the visa forms that he has to fill out. This man called him and told him that he cannot help him. Because of this my husband told him that he will never ever call him again and that if he sees him in the street he will not say salam to him.

That's interesting.....my husband hasn't mentioned any friends acting all weird.........I'll have to ask him about that.

He did mention that he thinks people look at him in pity that we are apart.....I believe that cuz I get that poor, pitiful look all the time.......absolutely HATE it.

I'm the one that moved to come to St. Louis and marry Gene. All my friends were very happy for me. I did notice something though, the last few weeks before my departure. A few friends of mine seemed "distant". I don't know whether it was my paranoia or what though. I thought they seemed rather quiet around me. One friend couldn't be around me much before tearing up, and asking to be excused. I think upon reflection, it was that some of my friends were so happy for me, but also looking at their loss. Not that our friendship would be lost, but that our daily contact, especially the physical (hugs) component would be lost.
