The time has now come for me to get my Texas drivers license, which seems to be a necessity for most jobs in texas.

I am in the last few months of my AOS application and should receive my GC in the next couple of months, and therefore will be able to begin work at long last (woohoo!!)

I have a full UK driving license. I was wondering if I have to do a US driving test to get the Texas drivers license, or can i just transfer the UK to a US drivers license.

The thought of having to do another driving test on the manic roads of San Antonio makes my blood run cold

thanks you :)

I dont know how things are in texas but at least in florida you still have to take the test. In florida they have you take the test but not out in the street they make you go around a gated lot that they have prepared with stop signs and signals and its only one car at a time. Im guessing its the same in texas. You might want to call your local DMV and ask them or go to your states website and click on the DMV link.

Thanks for your help. From looking at the links I think im going to have to do a driving test :(

Im hoping that its not as difficult as the UK driving test which took 3 attempts to pass and a total of 4 years learning

and also: Do you know if it true that I am allowed to drive using my UK driving license for up to a year?

Thank you!

What do you mean by full use license? depending on the class you, depends on the amount of things you have to test for. If you are licensed to drive a tractor you will have to do the driving test, Tractors are not provided, and written tests for any of the endorsements you choose to obtain. As for the simple personal vehicle license, as said before that is a state thing and with no federal guidelines to follow. Though it is quite possible they will make you take the written test.

You can use your UK licence for up to 1 year in any State

Your UK licence expires at age 70 and is renewed with an eyesight test so it will not be expiring soon I assume !

When you take your US test it will be a piece of cake compared to the UK test - (pathetically simple actually but I am not complaining) - as long as you look over your shoulder before moving into the lane on your right, you will pass.

You need the Texas drivers handbook - download it - study it and there will be another easy peasy theory test at the driving centre computer which asks questions like - if you are standing at a red light and it changes and a pedestrian is standing in front of you - should you mow them down or wait for them to cross - i kid you not there are questions like that.

When they try and take your UK licence from you - (they think it is 'out of state') - refuse and say it is the property of the queen and you can't give it over - they will shrug and give you your texas licence

Anyone who can parallel park in a hole the size of the Thames valley is considered incredibly accomplished - after being used to parking in Paris, it was mega easy on a huge wide quiet straight road with no traffic and a hole 6 Cadillacs could park in...

I did it all in Wisconsin in November 2005 and that is a true story of what happened

LOL :jest:

In AZ you have the choice to do either a 3 point turn or parallel park depending on the test centre you go to! Luckily the centre for the 3 point turn is just round the corner from me and it's called the Stocker centre, which is my last name - it is a sign! lol

It's funny, I never thought that a driver's license would be such a necessity for my husband to get a job, but it seems to be. He just got his EAD and has been contacting local construction companies to see who is hiring (hubby is a carpenter). Each company has asked if he has a license (not yet) and has suggested that he apply after he gets a NH license. Apparently, each company has quite a few workers who have lost their licenses for DUIs and they really need people to drive the company trucks!!!
