I actually would totally believe it's zip code (aka distance radius) based. Because there's got to be some sort of upper limit to how far your case might be moved in order to be expedited -- you're not going to get a summon to an interview in Ohio if you're in NYC, even if the Ohio office had nothing to do.

So if there's a max radius out of the ordinary catchment area of a field office, it may very well be that Manhattan isn't fully in the catchment area of Manhattan, and if this were the case, the West side would be the logical areas that may be part of a Newark catchment area, just because these zip codes are closer.

But it may also be that the radius of a catchment area is larger and the whole of NYC could fall into it. Until folks who live in, say, East Harlem, get asked to an interview at Newark, we won't really know indeed.

Btw, I, for one, would have no problem taking a flight to Ohio to do the drasted interview. I wish there was an option for "give me the shortest wait time, I'll deal with the logistics of an interview nationwide". But, well. (And, , cos I live in the West side of Manhattan)

I'd fly to Hawaii! I'm so tired of waiting.

It could also be time-related. For example, anyone in NYC (and it will be Manhattan/Bronx/Brooklyn as the Queens office is quicker) who has waited 12 months has their case transferred to Newark. Who knows, it's all guess work....

Hello y’all
I have been really busy for the past few weeks but here is just a quick update about my case:

I’m happy/frustrated/furious/exhausted/Relieved to annonce that my oath ceremony has fiiiiiinnnnnaaaallly been scheduled for January 17, 2020 at 500 Pearl Street. @Maite&Osmar we are on the same boat 😉.
As I mentioned in my last post, I was interviewed and got approved at the Newark field office on October 29th 2019... This whole process is a real mess ! I had an international trip planned for this coming holiday but now I have to change everything !!! @N400NYC I sincerely pray that none of you beginners get transferred to the Newark field office for their interview as the timeline afterwards gets really bad ! My cousin who had his case transferred to the Newark field office for the interview got his oath ceremony scheduled for January 24th 2020... the funny thing is that we were both interviewed at Newark the same day, I let’s y’all wonder...

2 MONTHS and 19 DAYS just to take the oath after the interview !!!

Good that you finally have a date. Bad/insane that you have had to wait so damn long. And I presume there has no been no human who has been able to give you an explanation for why the oath took so long to be scheduled? I don't get it. It's like they transfer these cases to Newark and then forget about them. It's madness. There is clearly a different process in place. Presumably Newark has to transfer the case back to NYC and for whatever reason the NYC field office then puts those cases in a different group when it comes to scheduling the oath. It makes no sense (like most of this process).

I read back and saw your timeline. What was the original "estimated case completion" month/year for your case?

Like you said, this whole process makes no sense !!! but I also think that the cases being transferred to Newark is definitely time related as I was way over my original estimated completion time when my case got transferred to Newark. My original estimated case completion was July 2019 but it did change numerous times during the process. At first it was July 2019 (9 months) than it switched to October 2019 and back to August 2019 after that It was delayed  all the way to January 2020. I do remember that I called USCIS multiple times about those changes but I was told every single time that it was normal and was still within the processing time.

what really got me upset is the fact that us, that got transferred to Newark are being penalized for no apparent reason !!!

I really do not understand why the overall  NYC applicants have to wait sooo long over this process while they have the capacity/capability/ressources to make this process a little faster... It’s so frustrating !

I share your frustration. There really is no excuse for the delay. I'd accept 6 months but forcing people to wait 12 months - after they have already waited YEARS to become citizens - is cruel. There is no national consistency and while some people become citizens in 3 months, others are waiting well over a year. I don't even read the posts in the April 2019 filers thread as it's infuriating to see so many people get interviews and become citizens while in Manhattan/Bronx we are left stranded.

What's even more insane is that the NYC field office oversees Manhattan, Bronx, Westchester and Rockland and those in W and R get interviews significantly sooner than those in Manhattan and the Bronx. WHY?!!!!

Today my "waiting time" (the part at the bottom of the profile) changed to 31 days which I wasn't expecting. It had changed to 2 months at the start of December. I guess this a good development! Estimated case completion is still March 2020.

There are 30,000 people from Manhattan/Bronx with outstanding N400 cases. Where are those people? I never understand why so few people from Manhattan/Bronx participate in this forum.....

Sorry to hear this. The whiplash feels almost more egregious than the wait itself ...

Also doesn't give me much hope that the original 8 months (now 6) I was given from my early October filing is going to end up being correct (Currently given as June 2020).

<sigh>

Has your estimated waiting time (at the bottom of the USCIS profile) changed this month?

And yes, it's the back/forth/up/down withe regards to the waiting time that makes the experience all the more maddening!

the date only changed after i did the biometrics. Otherwise, it's drawn down, but a-pace with time passing
