Hey guys,

So I got my interview date scheduled on Oct 28!

On my account however it moved from completion date From feb 2020 to March 2020.

any tips on the interview? Especially civics test, do we need to remember the dates? Also will my spouse need to join in or is this mainly solo?

From memory, you live in Westchester or Rockland?

People who lives in those areas get interview dates much quicker than those who live in Manhattan and the Bronx.

CITIZENSHIP TIMELINE

4/2019: Submitted N400

5/2019: Biometrics (3 weeks)

2/2020: Interview (10 months)

3/2020: Oath & naturalization (11 months)

6/2020: Passport received (3 months)

Officially a U.S. Citizen!

Congratulations to everyone who's passed the interview!! Can you share with us your experience, some tips/ advise on how the interview went? Thank you!! @GrowingPlants @Claudio Romero @summer eyes @ANJOS

Sure. Although I don’t have any specific tips.

So my interview was at 3:05pm. Anyone who has an interview before 2pm could be a lucky person to have their letter of oath giving them in the same day (happened to my wife).

Everything is smooth and easy until the waiting room. It was a hot day, and the room barely had an AC. I was dressed in business casual, but I saw people in different attire. I saw a woman in shorts. I saw people in jeans. The waiting time (after I got a ticket with a number) was about an hour before the officer called my number.

The officer who interviewed me was awful/my experience was awful. They really seemed like their enjoyed the power they have.

I don’t want to give too many details, but it was an unpleasant experience. The language they were using seemed a bit outdated, and I even found some wordings rude. They were laughing while asking questions in my file, but I couldn’t get what was so funny: my race, my height, they color of my eyes? Everything was funny for them. They were taking their time. I guess the officers need to interview us for a specific amount of minutes, ‘cause mine was checking time constantly.

I’m really glad it is over.

I attended  to my wife’s naturalization ceremony on September 20th, and it only took around an hour and a half. I really hope mine would also be short!

Good luck once again to all of you waiting for your dates!

Sure, My interview went pretty smooth. I passed my exam and now I'm in line to take my oath Ceremony on October 4th 2019. My best advise to give you is don't be nervous. That's just a simple interview about American history which you are already prepared for, and some simple questions about you.  As long as you are truthful and you study your civic questions, you should not have any issues. Please keep us posted and if you have any questions just hit me back again.

Good luck on the interview.

Sorry to hear that you had an unpleasant experience in the interview.  Anyway; all good in the end and congrats again.

Thanks!. My thoughts to you would be to memorize anything you included on your application as they can ask. Study all the questions and answers. Most importantly remain calm and stick to answering only what is asked. My wife reassured me that it was easy as I knew all the Q&A and that the interviewer is a person like me. That helped a lot. Good luck!

I’m happy to report that I passed my interview and my application has been approved.

my process was super smooth and simple in the Newark office. However, I waited for over an hour to be called after I checked in. My officer was super nice and a great sense of humor, he made the interview fun!

About 15 minutes after leaving the building, I received two emails. One that my application was recommended for approval and other saying I was put in line for oath. I can’t believe I’m typing this after almost 14 months of wait.... almost there!

Hi all,

I had my interview today at 26 Federal Plaza. Interview went well. Here is a quick summary of the morning.

I was scheduled for a 9am appointment so I showed up at 8.30am (you're not allowed to go in more than 30mn before your appointment time). Security was easy, finding the waiting room as well. I checked in with the officers and got a ticket number. I was waiting for my turn at 8.40am. I was called for the interview at 9.45am.

The officer was very nice if a little distant, but not in a negative way. I guess this is something these guys do so often they are so used to the routine of it. He put me under oath, asked for my ID, green card and current passport, and off we went. 6 civics question, the reading and writing test, and then he went through the whole list of questions in my N400 application. I had to amend a couple (one for a mistake I did, and another one because I travelled outside of the country between the N400 submission and the interview). That didn't seem to be a big deal, the officer modified the answers on the spot. This lasted about 15mn.

At the end, the officer had me review my info for the oath ceremony, including the full text of the oath that I was going to have to read. I had him remove the "so help me God" portion of it, which we can opt out of saying, then signed the form.

At the end, I was given the sheet that said I was recommended for approval, and went on my way (I was hoping I would get the date for my oath right then, I witnessed some people coming out after their interview and talking to officers behind the desks in the waiting room about an oath ceremony on October 24, but I wasn't so lucky).

A couple of hours later, the status of my application changed online in myUSCIS portal to "we approved your application - your final step to becoming a citizen is to attend the naturalization ceremony". Very happy!

Will report back once I know the date.

cheers

I had my interview on last week in Newark because my case got transferred for some reason. Since I am not the only person with a transfer from NYC to Newark, I'll share my experience.

Once the guard checks your appointment notice, he tells you to go to a window with a specific number. Ignore that. I was told to go to window 2 but there wasn't anyone there. There's also a little sign telling you to check in. I saw people leaving their notice there. Just go to the window with a person and tell them you're checking in. It's a bit confusing unfortunately. They also ask if you're there with a lawyer, which throws many people off (including me) and it's just one of those things. Don't read into it. Some people were like "Why? Do I need one?! Nobody told me about it?" etc.

The staff overall were simply nice and pleasant. Some were joking around starting at moment of greeting. I got there 30 mins before my interview time. My name was called to one of the numbered doors about 30 minutes after the interview time. I had two people in the office with me for an unknown reason. One of them picked me up from the door and the other one that was already in the interview office. I wasn't explained why.

Only one of them that was sitting at the computer talked to me. It was very mechanic and short but professional. I don't even think that there was any eye contact. I sat in front of a tablet and had to use that for some prompts.

She started with the English exam after confirming a few biometric details. I had to read a sentence out loud. Then I was asked to write a sentence on the tablet with one of those old, squishy-tipped styluses, which was a challenge because it wasn't very responsive.

Then we moved on to the civics test. She stopped after my 6th correct response. I didn't have any date or name questions. Naming 3 of the 13 original colonies was probably the trickiest one. So, super easy.

Then we moved on to the application review. She was reading the stuff so quickly from the screen that I had to guess when one of those yes or no questions ended and jump in with my answer. It transitioned into the oath part without pause and she asked me to check the info on the tablet and sign it a few times. Then handed me a piece of paper, said "You'll hear back from the New York field office about your oath ceremony." I asked what her decision was and she just told me to read the paper she gave me. It was approved. I asked about same day ceremonies. She said I couldn't attend it because I live in New York. I asked if I could leave. She said yes. I thanked and left. The whole thing probably didn't take longer than 15 minutes.

It was very unceremonious to say the least.

I was also expecting delays in updates on account since the different offices have to communicate but I got an update online within a few days.
