10 great job markets for techies

He's been working full-time as a programmer/systems analyst for 6 years (Brazilian system allows for working/studying simultaneously) and has been learning since he was a child.

I have absolutely no doubts in Rey's abilities as a programmer. He could be a genius for all I know.

The fact remains that most senior positions require BS/MS with 3-7 years of relevant experience.

American work experience is often a requirement for employment and foreign work experience

is not necessarily considered equal to American experience.

But then I'm sure you've read a million stories about it here.

Mark, I don't know how you could be "right" when Rey already has the type of job you're saying he can't get. BS degrees are helpful, and sometimes even required, but that's hardly the case all the time. He has the required experience and is more competent than most people with degrees in what he does.

Nobody cares if Rey gets a job labeled "senior this or that" as long as it's rewarding and the pay is right. The fact is, he gets offers for those types of jobs because of his experience level. If companies were so hung up on American work experience, I'm sure this wouldn't be the industry that sponsors so many H1Bs. Working for a PR firm in France isn't the same as working for one in NY; that's not really the case with IT. C# is still C# wherever you go, you know what I mean?

hate to break up the love fest here but that is in my experience correct. no degree = fat chance where i work. and seniority is not just the degree but includes time with the company, so usually the senior programmer is in his 30's if not older.

Look Mark, nobody is saying "oh Rey, go to NY and get a job as a senior programmer and only a senior programmer, or bust!" Nobody has their heart set on a specific level of job. It just happens to be what level he works at right now, what level he has worked at, and what level he probably will work at again soon in the event that he doesn't get a senior-level position right away. By which time he will have finished up his degree anyway.

I am not arguing with you because I hope for any position for Rey other than one that makes him happy, and he doesn't care either. I am arguing with you because you're being a ####### for reasons I still don't understand.

Appealing to Charles is a nice way to make it look like you haven't been a total arsehole in other spheres, but unfortunately Charles is not really up-to-speed. The real issue appears to be that you can't stop trying to make Rey look bad, in front of me and apparently also on VJ, for the past however many months.
