I don't know what Cherry does, but I am assuming he's not in his early 20s, is he?

I have no idea. Is he?

Doubt it, since every post he makes has years in it (and bullet points) so we know he was born again in the 80s or early 90s or something so he's got to be at least 40.

Actually though, you can be a senior programmer in your early 20s if you work your way up and you're very very talented.

I got my first senior job right after I turned 24.

Well there ya go. I wish I had a knack for this IT stuff because one thing I've noticed is that they really judge you on what you can do more than anything. I wish all fields were like that! Rey became senior very early and had no problem getting a job here in MN that was on his level--there's no starting over just because you're an immigrant in IT. Unfortunately I am retarded at anything logical or mathematical. Before meeting Rey I didn't know there was a field like this, but they really do just seem to say "ok what can you do?" and then hire you based on that.

It does seem to be a more merit-based field than a lot of other fields...like business/banking/finance...where it matters more who you know than what you can do.

I think anyone can learn programming, but you have to really *want* to learn it. Plus, it's difficult to learn anything practical from those dumb 'teach yourself' books. The best way to learn is to just jump in with both feet and write an application. Any application. Then write another one that does something completely different. Doesn't matter what it is or what it does. If you don't really want to learn it, a lot of people find that they simply can't do it.

You don't have to be a math whiz to be good in IT. Some computer science/engineering degrees require advanced mathematics, but you don't really use it that often. You need to have a more solid grounding in basic mathematics than most people do, though.

I consider myself a "senior" programmer and I am in my early 20's...

Very good.... I hope you receive the same consideration from your future employer.

 Mark you are such a dcik. If he is considered such by his current employer and his employers for the past 3 years, I don't see why anything would change. Can you accept without subtle digs that Rey just might be really good at what he does?

eta: I didn't really mean you're a dcik. Except in the way that you are. But you know I'm playing. :)

That wasn't a dig, Alex. Considering yourself senior is one thing, being considered for a senior position

when you're 22, have no University education, and mostly foreign work experience is quite another.

She is right. You are a dcik...

Why?

Am I wrong?

Mark, obviously the real issue here is not whether or not Rey is an extremely talented programmer (FYI, he is, foreign work experience in this field translates just fine and much of it was done for American companies in English, he has gone to college but not graduated, and has by accounts of his coworkers I've met outpaced everyone in every job he's had after his first one). I personally have no idea why you can't accept that he's good at what he does, has not needed to follow a traditional route because of it, and may succeed based on talent and hard work alone. But like I said, that is clearly not the issue at hand.

The real issue appears to be that you can't stop trying to make Rey look bad, in front of me and apparently also on VJ, for the past however many months. Seriously, Mark, what is your problem?

Whatever, Alex.

No education + limited experience = no senior position

It's as simple as that, even if your last name is Knuth.

He's been working full-time as a programmer/systems analyst for 6 years (Brazilian system allows for working/studying simultaneously) and has been learning since he was a child.

eta: if that's not enough, how did he get the senior-level consulting position he has right now at a Fortune 100 company?

I have absolutely no doubts in Rey's abilities as a programmer. He could be a genius for all I know.

The fact remains that most senior positions require BS/MS with 3-7 years of relevant experience.

American work experience is often a requirement for employment and foreign work experience

is not necessarily considered equal to American experience.

But then I'm sure you've read a million stories about it here.

You're just mad at me because I'm right and you want me to be wrong.
