Ok that definitely can't be the norm. But still, I think you can survive on $50/hr at our age, if it is true.
Let's see....$50 / hour x 40 hours/week x 52 weeks / year = $104,000 / year?

CherryX - $100k is an unreasonably low rate???

For NYC area, it definitely is!

What do you consider a reasonable salary for NYC area?

Hm, according to Salary.com, that's about 75th percentile for a senior programmer, for example.

Mark, don't you live in the NYC area? Do you think that is not enough?

No, I actually think it's plenty enough. It's CherryX who seems to think otherwise.

For DC area, $100K is workable in Montgomery County or McLean/Falls Church.

Unfortunately, living costs in NYC area (I looked up rents on ApartmentGuide) as well as income taxes are higher than in MD or NoVA.

(and that does not even address the "other issue" I have with the NYC area, which is that of travelability)

In NYC area? or everywhere in the U.S.?

NYC area.

Well then, 75th percentile means that 75% of senior programmers in NYC get less than $100k --

how can 75% be "unreasonable"?

Cherry - you're not answering my question. What do you think is reasonable in NYC?

That's the price you pay for the "privilege" of living in a city like New York...or San Francisco or Boston or Chicago for that matter. Why should the company, and ultimately its customers, pay to subsidize your choice of cities?

Exactly.

However, I find it hard to believe that 75% of senior programmers get less than 100k when most jobs Rey has seen have been at least 120k and not just for senior programmers. Who are these programmers making peanuts?

Junior programmers? :P

You can't be a "senior" programmer in your early 20's.

Seniority requires either work experience (5-10 years) or a graduate degree (5-8 years) plus experience.

I don't know what Cherry does, but I am assuming he's not in his early 20s, is he?

I consider myself a "senior" programmer and I am in my early 20's...

I have no idea. Is he?

I don't know, is he?
