Doubt regarding J-1 visa

Hi all,

I will be going to the US on a J-1 exchange student visa for a 6 month period starting July.

According to the rules of the visa, I am not allowed to engage in any part-time activities unrelated to my purpose of visit. More specifically, it states that I cannot be employed/paid by a US organization during my visit.

I am currently trying to secure a research consultant position in WorldQuant by writing alphas. If I do crack it, I will be writing code on a daily basis and get paid for it in my Indian bank account. WorldQuant is a US organization.

My question is whether I can somehow get paid for the WorldQuant work during my J-1 visit. Is it considered part-time employment if it is something that I had been doing in my home country and chose to continue remotely from the US? Any suggestions to work around the restriction would be appreciated.

Thanks

Aravindh

Yes, it’s a violation of the terms. This happened to a friend of mine on h4 visa, she was in violation of the terms of that by doing what you want to (work remotely and get paid offshore) - and she wasn’t even being paid by a US company.

Doesn't matter where or how you get paid (could be any bank on the planet), you'd be working and in violation of the terms of the J1.

no one here is going to tell you "how to work around this"

Yes - there is no workaround. OP will need to decide if the job or whatever course s/he is doing on the J1 is more important.

There is no somehow. You can't work while in the US, period!  You have to cease working for that company once admitted to the US on the J1.
