Sorry, I swear I'm almost done. Our interview is next month and my fiance's passport expires in july. I guess I"m not sure what i'm asking but is that going to be a problem? I mean it'll still be good for the interview and of course he won't be able to come down until it's renewed. This won't really matter will it??

One requirement is you have to have: "A passport valid for travel to the United States and with a validity date at least six months beyond the applicant's intended period of stay in the United States."

It needs to be renewed before the interview.

Applying for a Visa

The consular section at the embassy or consulate where you, the fiancé(e) of an American citizen, will apply for a visa, will tell you about any additional specific requirements that you need to fulfill to complete your visa application, such as where you need to go for the required medical examination. The consular officer may ask for additional information according to the circumstances of the case. Documents in foreign languages should be translated.

Take clear, legible photocopies of civil documents, such as birth and marriage certificates, to the interview. Original documents can then be returned to you.

No worries (with the questions). He DOES need to renew his passport - like the other more wiser posters said before me... if the passport does not have more than "6 months to go", the visa cannot be issued.- So send the fiance running to the passport office - i hear they are uber busy.

Get him down to a passport office ASAP along with a copy of the checklist from the consulate stating the required validity period along with the interview letter. He should be able to have it expedited (but will pay extra).

I just realized that my passport is going to expire in 5 months. I will have to get new one too and will be paying the extra $70 fee to get in expadited as Urgent. Just another pain in the ####### thing to get done before going to Montreal.

Ha well good thing I had the same problem....so i guess he can get it within 2 to 9 business days, but it's a little more expensive. I think we'll be alright.

Ditto on the 6 month thing. Also, consider that you don't want to arrive in the U.S. and then find that you are without a valid passport. In order to apply for a new one, you have to send the old one in. That means you will be out of status, possibly adjusting status, in a foreign country (it will still be considered 'foreign' at this point, right?) with no passport.

You also need a valid passport when you attend the AOS interview.

Just get him hopping. There is a hella wait happening and though he should be okay with time, if I were you and your fiance were David - I wouldn't reassure him too much, lol, or it would never get done in time.

i had to get a passport from the FORMER country of yugoslavia cause that's where i was born (although have not lived there since 1st grade), and Serbia said tough luck, but i kept pressing and pressing, and it cost several hundred dollars plus couple hundred to get it expedited. they wouldnt give me a serbian one, but a yugoslavian one. even though that country doesnt exist anymore. it's a mess. i had to call my aunt in europe to drive several hours last minute to the small city i was born in and get a birth certificate for me, too, lol. and the passport was in my maiden name, which pissed off the consulate.

If you walk in with a online-prepared package and all of your supporting documentation/guaranteed photos, they will rush you to the head of the line and you won't have to brave the long line ups, which can be a problem in some areas still. When I went at the end of January, there was still a six hour wait, but I was rushed through two different stop points, and I was in and out of there in ten minutes, head still spinning.

Doing it online is less of a pain, too, because it sorts through the not applicable questions for you.

Yes, I did the online e-pass. I just need to get my photos done and find a guaranter, which isn't all that easy at times. I just hate the Canadian passport process, I wish it was like the US's. Theirs is so simple and the passport is good for 10 years. What a pain it is going to be to re-apply in another 5 years and especially waiting for it and needing it to cross the border to commute to work and I won't have it.

This may be the reason that I may consider US citizenship - at least I'll have a US passport to cross with while waiting on the Canadian one and vice versa.
