Hi again (apparently I’m going to be posting a lot today! 😆),

Today’s voting day for our European MPs (please god, not Farage 🙏)...and it got me thinking...

I know after emigration, before naturalisation, I won’t be able to vote in the US...but does that mean I’ll still be able to vote in the UK elections (whilst on a green card in US)?

Thanks in advance!

I just looked this up, you can register to vote from the US once you move via Postal Vote (if what I read was accurate).

Ah fab! I knew I could by postal when I was there visiting (stayed there for 6 months in 2017, so did it then), but wasn’t sure if I still could on on a green card (as won’t be a UK resident). Thanks for confirming Brandon 🙃.

You can for 15 years after officially living abroad, and then you can’t anymore. That’s 3 elections if you time it right, who knows, you might be back in the UK in time to see Brexit through! 😂

I just registered for voting from overseas. It was simple. You register here: https://www.gov.uk/voting-when-abroad using your UK address that is on the electoral register before you emigrate. Your local authority then emails you the form to sign and mail off. You choose the term which you want to vote for, how (by post or proxy), your address in the States and the reason you are living there, print it out and sign it and then they will mail you the ballot papers.

Can vote for 15 years after you leave (including after you become a USC), in national and EU elections but not local.
I've always used my father as a proxy, because I wouldn't want to trust the timing of a postal vote...

Definitely will be doing proxy - much easier 🙃

My husband votes via postal vote, but this year they didn't even bother to send the EU ballot out in time for him to have even sent it back.

Yep, heard about the ballots being sent late for a few elections, so will definitely be doing proxy (my mum’s agreed to do it for me) 🙃
