Firstly thank you for taking the time to read my post.

Last year I failed to adjust my status from F1 (student) to permanent resident on the basis that my wife is a USC.

A month ago I finally got my interview notice and was looking forward to being done with it. My appointment date was Tuesday, May 21st at 8:15 AM.

Unfortunately, a tragedy happens and my mother in law suddenly passed away on the night of Monday, May 20th from a pulmonary embolism. I even tried to call the emergency number on my interview notice after we got home that night but I couldn't get through since it was extremely late.

I woke up early and called the same number at 8 am on the dot. It took me about 20 minutes to get a representative and another 7 or so to file the request to reschedule on the basis of an unexpected family death.

Later that day a received an automated receipt which said that my request had been passed to a supervisor but in that same email it said that all requests must be made before the time and date of the interview itself.

Now I would like to know your opinion on the case and if anybody had a similar experience with it.

The keyword is "automated." If you receive an unfavorable outcome to the request then immediately contact the USCIS Ombudsman and explain the situation in full: https://www.dhs.gov/topic/cis-ombudsman/forms/7001
