Hi all - we are patiently waiting our EAD, but in the meantime, I'm trying to gather ideas for the types of jobs my husband should look for when the time comes. He didn't finish high-school, but it working on his GED while he waits (he's been out of school for many years, so that is challenging for him) . He's a hard worker and enjoys being active - he would go crazy in an office type of setting where he had to sit in front of a computer every day. He's done lots of different things over the years in the different countries he's lived in, coaching soccer to teens, working in juvenile detention, driving taxis, maintenance, etc. His English is great, although his grammar isn't perfect. I'm trying to come up with ideas of things that will have a decent pay and benefits. Any ideas?

Not sure with a lot of the jobs, even without a unique skills/talent (not a degree in that sense) but how many jobs offer "great" benefits... maybe he could go get a certification of a trade of some kind?

Amazon. No experience required $15 an hr. All you need to do is pass drug test background check and pass a questionnaire. Yes it really is that simple to get hired at Amazon. Your always super active you start at the bottom but it's easy to move up the ranks if you show interest and show commitment. It may not be his ideal job long term but it's a job to help with bills or something on the side while he further education

Each city has a chamber of commerce. Find it.

Once you find it - talk with the secretary - tell her you want a schedule of events and let her know you'd like to attend.

Then - go in person to the Chamber of Commerce Office - talk with the President of the Chamber, tell him/her you want to volunteer at several of their events.

Attendees at chamber events are business owners and sales geeks, all looking for new business.  It usually is an informal-enough gathering where you can approach people and talk with them.

Now, the cool thing about being a volunteer there - is that you will be talking to everyone at least once - you might be at the reception table, you might be at the greeters table, you might help to run the audio/video system - whatever - but - the point is that you can meet everyone there, face to face.

Attend 2 or 3 of these, and folk remember you. When folk remember you, they will remember you are seeking employment and will consider you, because you're just not some name on a piece of paper - they met you at a chamber event and know that you were volunteering, helping out the chamber.

Go Get Em, and Good Luck!

PS - live in a really small town? go to the biggest town that's within 15 miles of your house.

Send him to Midland / Odessa Texas.  They can't find enough workers in the oil patch.  He can easily make $100K his first year.

Uber/lyft/shipt/grubhub etc. He can be his own boss.

Uber and Lyft have minimum year requirements of driving experience in the US so, unless he has that, it probably won't be an option.

I also don’t have a degree but I just got a job as a bartender which is pretty low pay but darn good tips since I’m “oh that sweet Australian girl behind the bar” to the locals. 4 shifts a week brings in $400 between pay and tips which considering my husband makes enough to keep us comfortable is fine. Next year I’m going to go to to college to get a trade degree to be more employable but for the time being I’m happy with flexible hours and to make enough to pay our mortgage down even faster (currently only 5 years away from owning our home completely if we continue at this rate!)

Costco!  Good pay and benefits, and they almost entirely hire from within, so everyone starts at the bottom and can work up.  Very physical, active job as well.

Trade school for being a plumber, carpenter, auto mechanic, electrician etc.

I know a plumber basically gets a free college degree and gets paid the whole time while he is in his apprentice stage learning, once he gets licensed he can go to about any part of the USA and work and be in demand.

In my area they offer 3000 to $5000 sign on bonus to get a job as a plumber

My wife's friend was in a similar situation. Came to the US from China with not much education and broken English. She started as a server in a Chinese restaurant (low pay, grueling hours, awful boss) and then went to work Target ($13/hour, some benefits, much easier work), then to Delta Airlines, then to USPS where she is currently an hourly worker making $15/hour waiting for a full-time position. I think it's like a 5-year wait at this point, but the pay is over $20/hour with good benefits. Her husband is an Engineering manager at a medical device company so she doesn't have to work but insists on it.

Honestly, I'd start focusing an getting a career in the trades from day one (electrician, plumber, HVAC, etc). Apply to any job even remotely applicable, even something like Home Depot would not be a terrible starter gig. Start watching YouTube videos related to the trade. Get an apprenticeship when able.

A few months ago an electrician came to my house to do a few hours of work on a Saturday. I joked that I felt sorry for him having to work on a Saturday. He told me "don't feel bad, I get paid $50/hour on weekends, and there's still too much work"....
