SSN and K-1: doc from agency requiring SSN

The Social Security Card application instructions (p. 3, Item 5) say, "If you check 'Legal Alien Not Allowed to Work' ... you must provide a document from a U.S. Federal, State, or local govt. agency that explains why you need a SSN..."

What "document" do you suggest?

We want a SSN in order to get a California ID (from DMV) and marriage license. DMV  online info says "Evidence of your SSN is required on applications for an original ID card. The SSN is electronically verified with Social Security Administration while you are in the DMV office."

But this is on a webpage. Do I print that out? Do I go to DMV and ask for some document?

Good thing you don’t need to check that so no worries about unnecessary documents.

  1. Forget about the California ID for the moment.  You will need to wait for the EAD
  2. You don't need the SSN for the marriage license.  Don't wait for the SSN.  Get married asap.
  3. Still, apply for the SSN asap.  Having an SSN is very useful in America.

That would be a false statement. According to his timeline, he has not even filed for AOS or EAD. So he is not allowed to work.

OP, you don't need a SSN to get married. You probably will not be able to get your California ID until you are married and have a SSN. From what I understand, all K1s are allowed to get a SSN during a certain time period. But a lot of the situations I have read about are how the SS office delayed their applications for long enough by using manual verification that by the time the office got around to their applications, if they didn't lose it first, the time period was up for the K1 to get the SSN. So the K1 just had to wait until they had EAD or GC.

That's news to me, because K's aren't allowed to work without first applying to EAD. Please provide the instructions you are referencing.

Technically, A K1 recipient can apply for an EAD immediately upon arrival prior to marriage.  Now of course this is a waste of time and money, but they are eligible to work during the length of the I94 with an EAD and an SSC.

You won't get any such document, as you do not have a reason to get a SSN. Wanting a California ID is not a reason for needing a SSN. You need to get married, for which you do not need a SSN, and then apply for permanent residence, and I would suggest EAD too. Once you get either of those, then you can apply for your SSN, and then get  California ID.

I think you are hung up on wanting to drive, but the thing is a lot of us haven't driven for months because we are not allowed to. Its hard, but you'll get through it.

Right. That's what I'm saying. They are allowed to work, but only after they apply for and receive EAD. Thank you for confirming my point. I've edited my response that you quoted to clarify that they are not allowed to work unless they apply for and receive EAD.

Right. That's what I'm saying. They are allowed to work, but only after they apply for and receive EAD. Thank you for confirming my point.

Which means they are an alien legally allowed to work.  The SS5 does not ask if they have an EAD, etc., but a K1 can work with the proper documents.  This is why you hear everyone recommend a K1 entrant to get an SSN as soon after they arrive since it is legally allowed.

If you can spend some time listening to suggestions and not stick to your untrue belief..

k-1 visa holders are allowed to work with work authorization. So you check “alien authorized to work” option, regardless of whether you intend to apply for EAD or not.

That option you are sticking to is for people who aren’t authorized to work at all and will have “NOT FOR EMPLOYMENT” printed on SS card.

Hmm, I see your point. Good luck to OP getting his SSC and California ID.

I've been educated. You can check legally allowed to work, even though you actually can't work without first getting EAD. Thank you Bill&Katya for helping me to understand.
