That’s simple to answer: Donald Trump. His administration has intentionally made it more difficult for people to become citizens and slowed down the process. The result is a massive backlog of pending cases.

And why my husband sent his application is as soon as he could after the election.

In fact, the letter he received at his swearing in congratulating him on becoming a citizen was signed "Barack Obama", four months after Trump was sworn in. Hubby was incredibly happy about it, so was I. :)

I'm sure I'm being slow here, but can someone help me understand how LIFO, if true, reduces the backlog?

I don't understand the logic either. The only thing I could think of is something like this:

- separating the "backlogged cases" (e.g. all from prior 2019) from the new 2019 cases so essentially there would be 2 separate lists, not one long queue

- they might assign staff to deal with the backlogged cases and other staff to deal with the new 2019 cases

- combining the processing times of those 2 separate queues would then be an inaccurate reflection of what is really going on...

- perhaps all new 2019 cases not processed by the end of 2019 then get dumped into the "backlogged cases" bucket

Thanks.  Still don't see how it really changes anything other than mess up people who applied beforehand.  I remain skeptical that this is really happening on a broad scale (yes I saw that YouTube clip) but at the same time I recognize that a NYC Jan 2019 filer getting an interview in June must mean something...

I don't see what the point of LIFO is either other than to help the office get a better sense of how they are faring with backlogged cases. But fundamentally such an approach is extremely unfair to those who are caught up in it. Why should a person who applied in the middle of 2018 be forced to wait longer than someone who applied in January 2019?! It makes no sense. This entire process seems littered with instances of unfairness and inequality. My concern is that if I don't get an interview this year I may then be dumped in the "backlogged cases" basket and then become part of that mess.

1. You are extremely lucky to have received such an early interview in NYC: 5 months after submission is very uncommon. When you say "New York" are you referring to the Manhattan office?

2. All of the estimated case completion dates changed for New York last week. If you have an interview in June, I think you can ignore that case completion date. The oath ceremonies are usually 1 month after the interview providing you are approved on the day.

HI i passed interview but oath ceremony will be held after 2 months in rockland county.

I am not a supporter of Trump, but that's more of a rhetoric than fact. The reason N400 applications have been delayed is because all employment based green card applications now require an interview which was not the case earlier. So, now apart from doing N400 interviews, the same immigration officers also have to do GC interviews which has created backlog for N400 interviews as well.

Who introduced that requirement October 2017? The Trump Administration.
