Hi Guys,

I am really confused. My mother requested my sister (filed i130) last year. She lives in Virginia, so we sent the form to Chicago center. We received the notice witht the priority date a couple days after filing, at the bottom of the notice it says California center. ANy idea why our case was sent there? Our case is f2A and california center is the slowest center right now. Any idea how do they assigned centers? I dont understand who if we live in the east coast our case ended up in the west coast.

Thanks

They do it on on types of visa application (certain service center does certain types) and case by case basic.  It won't be an issue as the petition will most likely be approved before the PD becomes current.  In the case of non-immediate relative (Family Preference Immigrant Visa) , having I-130 approved very sooner in the process is not actually a good thing.

Where you live doesn't determine the service center handling your case. Unlike USICS field offices where an interview is involved, service centers generally process petitions and applications without an interview, so there is no need to be located near the petitioner.

That said, most non-immediate relative I-130s are sent to CSC (California) for processing, such as F2A.
