Hi,

I'll be applying to renew my 10 year green card soon and am having some anxiety about it. There is nothing unusual about my case, should be a straightforward renewal, but I feel like nothing is straightforward anymore these days under the current administration.

Has anyone been through the renewal process recently without issue? I need to hear reassurance 🙂

(Not that it should matter, but my citizenship is Canadian.)

Thanks!

Misty

It all comes to anxiousness when dealing with Immigration. But you mention that yours is a straightforward situation, then your concern is just the waiting period.

The only anxiety is about the new card not arriving any time soon. It is the new normal. Faced with that new normal, and my horror at the idea of having no valid green card while I waited for the new one, I opted instead to apply for citizenship.

Consider that option if your green card expiration is more than 12 months from now.

Thanks Mike.  My GC expires exactly one year from now.  Does application for citizenship need to be completed a year in advance of GC expiry? I've not considered this option so will need some time to think about it.

Citizenship application can occur when you are eligible to submit

As others have suggested, consider applying for citizenship. Once granted, you'll be able to vote!

You can apply for citizenship whenever you want.  Now is good.

Since you are at 12 months from GC expiration, you should file your I-90 as soon as you are allowed to, which is 6 months prior to expiration. You will not get a new green card before your current green card expires. The card might take longer to arrive that your N-400 oath ceremony. Hence my suggestion.

Misty,

This administration is making things very straight forward and actually going by the guidelines that have been in law for sometime before he ever took office.
