Hi everyone,

We had a question regarding the Montreal interview for Canadian K-1 applicants. Does that interview usually take place on a weekday?

The Canadian applicant is just starting a new job and is not keen on telling his new boss he plans on leaving Canada in a year. He might therefore need an alibi for going to the Montreal interview, a six-hour drive away. If the date of the interview is negotiable, all the better; but we don't suppose that to be negotiable...

Thank you so much, if anyone knows!

Generally most embassies do weekday only appointments that I am aware of. And they don't always do it Monday-Friday, might only do them on certain days of the week even.

It's going to be on a weekday. The date of the interview is when the consulate/embassy says it is.

Tell the boss the interview is for a travel visa. It's a true statement.

What puzzles me about the OP is that the visa is typically issued a few days after the interview.  The notion that there will be an interview, and year later a K-1 visa issued is generally erroneous unless OP is expecting extended administrative processing.

He legally doesn’t have to tell his boss anything.  He can either use any accrued vacation time to book off a day or two, or rely on “personal” time.  Last I remember you can take up to 10 unpaid days for “personal” (ie undisclosed) reasons.

It will be a weekday, and if it’s still the same as when I went, they didn’t have them on Mon/Fri, so I wound up with a Wednesday appointment.

Yup - They have been for a while now only on Wednesday mornings as @purem4g1c said, + a 9:00 slot as well.

By the time you hit the interview, you are not that far away from giving your notice to quit (unless you expect a lengthy administrative processing).  Our interview was February 27th; we were visa-in-hand March 5th.  I gave my notice on March 15th with my last day being March 29th.  The first time I told my boss about my intention to relocate was on March 15th; honestly, it's not all that difficult to go through this process without divulging what's going on.

Personal days and vacation days are both options for the interview (as other users have said, they are currently on Wednesday mornings).  If you're a six hour drive away, it's definitely doable to leave Tuesday after work, stay in MTL Tuesday night, have the interview Wednesday morning, return home, and show up for work on Thursday.

Hi,

Thanks very much for all the info. It is encouraging. Good point about timing it with the move itself; might just do that. I'm all for transparency, I guess at this point in the line it's just good to have an idea of what to expect.
