Administrative processing withheld passport

Hi All,

I wanted to know if it’s possible to ask for my fiancé’s passport back. After his interview they placed him under administrative processing and it’s been 6 months already. I have emailed the embassy several times and only get auto responses back. Also made an appointment for my fiancé to check status in person and they told him to wait. This process has been very stressful especially when you can’t plan your life for the future as it falls under their hands. My fiancé and I are planning to take a trip since no wedding is happening soon and we wanted to know if it’s possible to ask for the passport back without disrupting the administrative processing.

It really depends on the reason for long AP -  additional international travel can trigger some additional AP if they are looking into potential terrorist related activities.  However, asking to get passport  back while waiting is very normal.

Find away to access the bureaucracy of your embassy/consulate and ask for the passport back. Many other have done the same. Just explain that while you are in AP you would like to take a vacation/travel and need the passport. This is not going to set you back and no additional "red flags" are going to appear and set your AP to be extended. AP can be different from country to country. Middle eastern and African country's are more susceptible to longer waits.
