My husband and I are considering adoption, and I am curious if anyone here on VJ have decided to do the same thing. I know a lot of you all are creating lots of babies :) but I am wondering if anyone has gone the adoption route. We have a lot of questions about the whole process, especially about the process of choosing a child. if anyone wishes to share their thoughts and experiences, that would be great, or if you want to keep it private, please feel free to PM me.

thanks everyone! :)

There was a great story on tv about a couple, her american and him i think from Jordan. Married and decided to adopt a pair of twins from Russia. After more checking they found there were also 2 more sets of twin from this same family just older. So 6 brothers and sisters all seperated with the birth parents still alive, they had abandoned them. THe couple finally kept working and trying and was approved to adopt all of them, living happily ever after. Sorry i know thats not what you ask but made me think of that.

Thanks. :) We spent some time last night looking at a couple adoption registry-type sites and it broke our hearts, especially Jerry's. He kept saying "how can you choose one kid over another and leave the rest behind?" When the time comes when we can start to plan to start the process, I am not sure how we're going to do it.

It's fairly common in former Soviet states with orphaned children. For many reasons, such as, their parents dying at an early age, alcholism, poverty, etc. I have a friend in Ukraine that works for an adoption agency there. The orphanges are over-crowded, unsanitary, and cannot accomodate most of these children. When they hit 17 years old, they have to leave whether they have a place to go or not. That's reality there. I met some of those children living in the sewer drains because it was the only warm place they could find to keep warm and sleep. But I found these kids to be very articulate, social, and considerate. Especially, toward Americans. They know we'll kick 'em down something to help 'em if we can. At least, most of us will.

Sure - Americans never abandon their children. There's just no such thing as American orphanage.

Gimme a break...

I think it's a wonderful idea Cassie. I'm adopted myself. I was adopted at the age of 2 years, by the most wonderful parents in the world! I've never sought out my birth parents. I do appreciate though that my young unwed birth mother DID put me up for adoption. It was very unselfish on her part. (You'd have to know the history of her life to know that I was WAY better off).

As an aside, I did hear recently, think it was the paper? That adoptions from China, and Russia, are currently "on hold" right now. Maybe some political manuvering, but I believe some of it stems from those countries beliefs that "too many" American couples are adopting "their" children. I dunno.

I was told right away that I was adopted. I'll always remember my Mom's words..." My love for you didn't grow UNDER my heart, in my tummy, but within it....".

Wishing you all the best in your new journey!

We're thinking that because of all the potential paperwork difficulties (there's a possibility of moving to Canada in the next five years), adopting locally or domestically will probably be our best option. We have a good friend that is a social worker with a local children's home who would definitely be able to help us with things. It's just a matter of timing, I guess.

And cartooy, what your mother said to you was lovely. (F)
