Identity Theft

We certainly didn't see it coming, and we found out about it too late. Someone managed to steal my husband's identity and take out a $2,000 student loan in his name. Back in 2006  As of last month, this fraudulent account was sold to a collection agency. Hubby found out just recently, when we checked his credit report just for the heck of it - and there it was! Hubby never thought that someone with his credit score was able to get any loan at all - turned out it was possible...

Anyways, we put a credit alert on his report and requested all the paperwork from the collection agency - loan applications and whatever else they may have.

What else should we do? Do we have to file a police report? How should we dispute that loan with the original lender? Will he have to go to court? I'm sorry if I am asking stupid questions, but neither of us has had an identity stolen before. I tried to do some research on the net, but haven't found anything about getting fraudulent baddies off the credit report, so any help/advice will certainly be appreciated.

Thanks! :)

Thanks! :) I appreciate it.

We've had so many financial issues lately, we sure didn't need that one! But I'm being positive :)
