Update from us:

We applied for the SSN today (July 3rd) and will be getting the card between 2-4 weeks through the mail.  The delay in 2-4 weeks has nothing to do with any system issues or us waiting too long, it is just the normal time.  We suggest you go within the 7 days of arriving to get the SSN, don't wait the 2 weeks suggested.  Otherwise, you are looking at not having a SSN until about 6 weeks after arrival, which delays your marriage license and AOS.

Here are the facts:

  • We arrived June 26th
  • Printed i94 ASAP
  • Went to SSA Office July 3rd
  • In our state, Florida, we have two types of offices (Social Security Administration Office and the Social Security Card Center).  If your state is the same, you should go to the Social Security Card Center because you are requesting a NEW, non-issued SSN and, therefore, are getting a whole new card.
  • We took his DNI, passport with the visa, Acta de Nacimiento (not translated yet), and the i94 form.
  • They have the application available in the office.  We used the Spanish form so he could fill it easier and waited to be called.
  • The officer did not take anything except the filled application and the passport.  So, he accessed the i94 from the computer, etc.  Then, he gave us back the passport and a receipt.

We are going to translate the Acta de Nacimiento within the next few days to have it ready for the AOS.  But, wanted to let you know, it is not necessary to have it translated for SSN (again, they didn't even look at ours).

If we can be of any assistance, let us know.  We are trying to be as active and responsive as possible to help others in this journey, especially because the AOS does not have as much information readily available.

Why not having a SSN would delay the marriage license?

I don’t know about your state but in Florida and the city where we are, they require both people to have SSN to get married.

In some states, is required to have a SSN in order to apply for a marriage license.

Regarding your birth certificate, just send a copy of it and the translation. Original only needed for the interview.

(a)(6) is for wanting to work in the time between POE and K1 visa expiration (90 days). You can't renew this EAD so you'd have to reapply for a new one after your 90 day period is up.

(c)(9) is the one you want, it's for concurrent filing with I-485 and will authorize you to work until you get your green card. I believe it can also be renewed if it expires before you get the green card, :)

ya lo cambie!! gracias!!

Sorry, for some reason my phone did not quote the message properly.  Yes, some states (like ours-Florida) require both people to have SSN before they can have the license or certificate of marriage.

Giving some updates here. We got married on July 12th, luckily everything went pretty smooth. We had applied for the marriage license 2 days before, we had it signed on Friday and then took it back to the courthouse on monday 15th and we got some copies and the original back.

We went today to apply for her SSN and in theory she should get it in 4-6 weeks. Although I'm kind of worried that she may have hers denied. We have another couple here that went through the same process and the beneficiary had her SSN denied after they applied. Hopefully it's not our case.

We are planning on applying for AOS this coming Monday!

It's all good, I kinda started to worry that maybe I had missed something on our application for the marriage certificate. Here it's not required.

Updates on my case. We just receive NOA1. We sent every at the end of june but got lost in the mail. Still don’t know how. So I can say now that the waiting is real haha

Regarding the medical records, did you choose not to file the form for medical examination? My fiance has hers from the time of the interview along with the vaccinations, but I assume they are all in Spanish. Do you know if it's safe to present that document at the time of the interview?

I believe once you're in the U.S. everything needs to be in English so you'll need it translated if it's in Spanish. Bring the original (Spanish) and translated one to the interview.

This post is pretty helpful in determining if you can submit your DS-3025 (what she got from the doctor) or need to submit I-693:

Thanks for the info. I'm going to see if I can have the document translated by that website you once provided www.daytranslations.com. Luckily looks like we don't have to file this form immediately, and can just bring it to the interview if we need to have the examination performed again here in the U.S. correct?

I'm not 100% sure but yes I think you can bring any updated stuff to the interview (especially since it will probably be months since you first filed AOS) :)

So she showed me her documentation from the envelope and it's all in English. But she didn't have her flu shots over there in Argentina. We'll see what we need to do about that.
