Hi All,

My fiancee's interview is tomorrow and we are SO nervous. Can anyone share what their personal interview experience was like? We are thoroughly prepared and have a ton of documentation but I'm just curious to know what the overall vibe was like during the interview. What reasons would they have to deny the visa? Will she know right then and there at the end of the interview if it has been approved or not? Thanks in advance!

If you have everything they asked for and know your story it'll be easy. Ours was very quick, maybe 10 minutes actual interview time. She will be approved there or be given a 221-G (white piece of paper that asks for additional evidence). Just tell them you're there for a K1 and they'll escort you where you need to go.

Good luck!

Hi All,

Just wanted to give a quick update that my fiancee had her interview this morning. It went great and the visa is approved! The actual interview itself was only about 15 minutes and the only hiccup was that they didn't have a copy of my passport for some reason (it was definitely sent with everything else prior). She just had to go get a copy of it and drop it back off at the embassy and all is good. Now we just wait for the processing and for the visa to be delivered! I'd like to thank all of you for your responses and tips. You all definitely made this process a lot more manageable. Salud!

Congratulations!  Make sure you follow the other thread because you will eventually need it for AOS.  Also, I shared a couple of tips for traveling and going through POE, just to have it in mind.  Now, before she leaves Argentina, she must make sure her birth certificate is legalized and apostille.  If she has any divorce decrees, or similar things, those must be done, too.  Just FYI so you don't miss that.

Oh great more paperwork lol. Thankfully she has already taken care of the birth certificate and has never been married before or anything so that's easy. I will definitely be checking out the other thread and POE tips as I know she is nervous about that. Thanks again!

@MikeyBee Congrats!!

@Fe.Ta Is the other thread Argentinians AOS fillers? I was wondering the next steps to follow. Mostly the POE part. We will travel together but I was wondering if the medical exam is on the sealed package you need to give the immigration officer.

Yes, the other thread is:

This thread is mainly for AOS, which is what you will do once you are both together in the USA.  Now, for POE, I will be posting my review and some helpful tips.

The medical is in the sealed packet and it should remain there.  The doctor should have given the beneficiary a form called DS-###, which indicated the medical had been completed along with immunizations (vaccinations),etc.  This is something you need to keep so you can use it for the AOS packet.  If you don't have it, make sure you get it from the doctor before you leave Argentina.  The sealed packet should remain as is, it will have a small tear or slit in a corner, that is normal.  The medical should be good for a year as long as it was fully completed in Argentina.  Also, did you legalize and apostille the birth certificate and all other applicable documents (divorce decree, etc.)?  If not, you must do so before you leave Argentina because you will need those for AOS and it needs to be done there.

For those of you asking, here is my original review regarding POE:

We entered through the Miami airport. Because our original flight got delayed by 15 minutes, we were handed off some orange sleeves that would have expedited the process through regular immigration and security. HOWEVER, because we had a visa, these "express sleeves" were useless to us. When we arrived at the immigration window, they did the normal process and then instructed us to go to the immigration room where we waited for the packet to be reviewed. We were not interviewed or questioned for too long. They only asked us where we were going to live, how we met, and finally when we were going to get married so they could let us know it was OK and it fell within the allowed window of staying within the visa. We still missed our next flight, which we knew we would, but it wasn't because of immigration taking as long as in other cases. It was because the allotted window (1 hour or so) was not enough to go through a normal U.S. entry when you are coming internationally (even of a U.S. citizen) AND go through the immigration that checks a visa plus grabbing the luggage to recheck prior to boarding. We hope that helps!

Keep in mind ours was Miami, which is different than what yours could be.  However, here are some general tips:

  • Take the sealed envelope in your carry-on (DO NOT PUT IT IN YOUR CHECKED BAG - I CAN'T STRESS THIS ENOUGH), preferably your backpack because it is easier to open, pull, and hand over.
  • Keep all of your documents organized (passport, airplane ticket, etc.) - you will need to show them throughout your travel
  • Make your stop or layover a bit longer, this will help in case they take longer in the "room" - we made the mistake of booking it too close, our flight got delayed, then we were held, so we were going to miss the connection either way, not smart
  • If you need to let them know he/she does not speak English, you can, they may seem aggressive but overall just be to the point and direct
  • Don't be intimidated - As a frequent traveler, I have been sometimes through the grind of the immigration and I am the USC.  Just answer promptly, courteous, and move on.  If you let them get to you, those that abuse power will try to pull one.

Off the top of my head, these are some travel tips trying to get through POE.  If I think of anything else, or you have further questions, please feel free to ask! :)

Paperwork is about 5-10 years long if you think about applying for K1 all the way through the oath ceremony as a citizen, so stay put!  Haha

Received official confirmation that USCIS will be implementing the public charge rule (I believe is effective February 24th).  I am sharing this here for those that have not yet filed for a K1 visa (the ones to follow), are in the process of it, or will be applying for AOS soon.  Make sure you check the updated forms and how this will affect the stage that you are at.  For those of us that already filed (even AOS), this should not apply to us.  Some dates are sticky it seems that they are also mentioning the October 2019 date as a reference, but I don't know how that applies.  My advice would be that if you filed after the October 2019 initial due date, then you should research further.
