Thank you!!! Interview was so nerve-wracking and it took an hour and a half! The IO told us “I’ll review my notes and will mail you my decision.”

had our interview this morning in san antonio, the officer was super nice and we joked around and stuff. he asked really basic questions - nothing too crazy and then asked us to hand over anything that would prove a bona fide marriage (we had apartment lease, car insurance, joint bank account, wifi, electric bills and letters from friends) he then said that although he cannot approve on the spot, that our case did not have any red flags and everything should be okay. i assume my status will be updated later but good experience overall!

On our EAD application we checked the box for an SSN (part 2, question 14), but we never received an EAD or an SSN. We have the greencard now but had to go the SSA office (for the fourth time since Feb of this year!) and finally were able to apply for SSN after receiving our greencard. It took about an hour wait in the lobby and another hour for SSA worker to fill out our information, and even then, they weren't very confident in what they were doing and couldn't answer all of our questions. We had hoped to have an SSN shortly after arrival at POE, back in February 2019, but whatever. It took us almost a year without very many answers. It seems the US government can cash checks very quickly but cannot provide answers at the same speed.

My point is, checking the box on the EAD application  (part 2, question 14) means absolutely nothing. During our AOS interview I asked the officer about the form question (part 2, question 14), and if the green card would come with an SSN and he said he had no idea how that works and to talk to SSA office. Very unhelpful and confusing and a giant waste of time for us. Why do they have that question  (part 2, question 14) on form I-785 when they do not use it, do not consider it and do not support it?

If you have an EAD card in your hands already, take it to the SSA office with your spouse's birth certificate and passport and you should be able to get a brand new SSN. In our local SSA office they act like its really strange for you to need an SSN when you're almost 40 years old, that almost act like its suspicious. I am so glad it's over and we do not have to deal with the SSA office anymore at this time. They do not make this easy for immigrants, I can only imagine if she didnt have me or didnt speak English, how incredibly difficult this could have been.

It took us about 3-4 days to receive the SSN number after we filed in person at the SSA office (for the fourth attempt).

As far as I know, your SSN number doesn't change, only the status of it for example "For work only" or unrestricted such status changes. Your number remains the same.

Just so others know, there will be multiple status changes on your case after the interview. The following are the updates I received so far:

Nov 19 (Interview day): Card is being produced
Nov 20: Case is Approved (For I-130 and I-485)
Nov 22: Card was mailed to me

I still anticipate there will be another update mentioning Card was picked up by USPS and the tracking details before I actually receive the card. It's so interesting to see status updates almost everyday now after spending a period when there was nothing for months. Refreshing!

I totally agree with you. I checked the No box, because I already had a SSN card and didn’t need one but they sent a copy of it. Such a mess, no streamlined process at all 🤦🏽‍♀️ But I feel like that’s the case with most, if not all, government agencies.
